The huge barrier of the Rocky Mountains was not known, and it was only in the effort to reach the Pacific by water that they were discovered. So important was the desired route considered that, in 1720, the French King sent out the noted historian of New France, Father Charlevoix, to explore westward and discover a way to the Pacific.
John Aislabie, who had been chancellor of the exchequer, laid out this park in 1720, and such repute did his ornamental works attain that Studley was regarded as the most embellished spot in the North of England. Ultimately, through heiresses, it passed into the hands of the present owner.

It is curious to look for them. For instance, there is a certain great burying ground laid down in Strype's map of the year 1720.
