IV. From the manner of Christians' public meetings in those primitive times, both in the church of Jerusalem and in other churches. "In an upper room the apostles with the women and brethren continued in prayer and supplication," Acts i. 12-14. We read of their meetings in the house of Mary, Acts xii. 12. In the school of one Tyrannus, Acts xix. 9. In an upper chamber at Troas, Acts xx. 8.

Others, such as Gen. xii. 1-3, Deut. ix. 12-14, Job iv. 16-v. 5, Ps. xxxvii. 35-38, l. 16-23, have only slight variations. There are only two passages of more than three consecutive verses in length that present wide divergences. This is perhaps what we should expect: in longer quotations it would be better worth the writer's while to refer to his cumbrous manuscript.

The inhabitants live in simplicity, but also in the general ignorance and indifference as to religion. I was exceedingly low in mind on the way, but felt once more that we were in our right place, and my precious M. Y. encouraged me by saying we should not go there in vain. On opening the Bible, I was comforted in turning to Psalm lxxviii. 12-14.

But I can get no intimation from Maurice how the plan is prospering financially. All he will say is, "We shall all know at the close of the year." Mr. Hardcap's Family Prayers. "JENNIE," said I, the other evening, "I should like to go and make a call at Mr. Hardcap's." Our new pastor had preached a sermon on that unapplied passage of Scripture, Luke xiv: 12-14.

Luke is followed, there will be no greater dislocation than e.g. in the quotation from Deut. ix. 12-14 and Exod. xxxii. Hom. xvi. 13, where the verses Deut. xiii. 1-3, 5, 9 are quoted in the order Deut. xiii. 1-3, 9, 5, 3, and elsewhere.

These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them; for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings; and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful. Vs. 12-14. And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.

Life, pp. xli., xlii. Vol. i., p. 79. Job 33:15. Grace Abounding, No. 5, vol. i., p. 6. Life appended to the first and second editions of the forged third part of Pilgrim's Progress. Grace Abounding, Nos. 12-14, vol. i., p. 7. How do these hair-breadth escapes illustrate the unerring providence of God, and the short-sightedness of even pious Christians.

Obededom the Gittite, who was adopted into the tribe of Levi. Compare 2 Sam. vi. 10, 11, with 1 Chron. xv. 18, and 1 Chron xxvi. 45. The cases of Jaziz, and Obil, 1 Chron. xxvi. 30, 31, 33. Joshua x. 12-14.

This relationship between the intellectual life of Babylonia and Assyria finds its illustration and proof, not merely in the religious literature, but in the religious art and cult which, as we shall see, like the literature, bear the distinct impress of their southern origin, though modified in passing from the south to the north. See pp. 12-14.

Peace and unity in the Church are in themselves amiable, and ought to be promoted, Psal. cxxxiii. 1, &c.; Eph. iv. 3, 13; 1 Cor. i. 10. 2. Schisms and divisions are simply evil, and all appearance, cause, and occasion thereof, ought carefully to be avoided, 1 Cor. xii. 25; Rom. xvi. 17; 1 Thes. iv. 22. 3. See 1 Cor. xii. 12-29; Eph. ii. 12-16, and iv. 12-14, and v. 23-25.
