Beside the two oscillating ladles we see the internal organs rising and falling, protruding and retreating like a piston-rod, but it is impossible to observe the precise nature of their action, bathed as they are in the opaque blob of foam. The end of the abdomen, continually palpitating, rapidly closing and opening its valves, oscillates right and left like a pendulum.
The two small cylinders connected by a piston-rod on the right hand side of every locomotive just in front of the cab form the air-pump. It is always at work while a train is standing still, forcing air through lengths of rubber hose between the cars and into the reservoirs located beneath each one.
"What is that thing there?" he asked, "the thing that goes round, I mean." "The paddle-shaft," replied the Captain; "it turns the wheels." "And that other thing that goes up and down?" "The piston-rod," said the old sailor. "It is this which turns the shaft." "Then, I want to know how the piston makes the shaft turn round, when it only goes up and down itself?"
He opened the valve. With a strange noise, that made the two Enderley men spring back as if the six devils were really let loose upon them, the steam came rushing into the cylinder. There was a slight motion of the piston-rod. "All's right! it will work?" No, it stopped. John drew a deep breath.
The piston-rod was packed with a cup leather, or with ordinary packing, the latter required to be adjusted with the greatest nicety, otherwise the piston struck the hammer before lifting it, or else the force of the blow was considerably diminished.
The cylinders of the engine were placed on each side of the boiler, in an oblique position, one end being nearly level with the top of the boiler at its after end, and the other pointing towards the centre of the foremost or driving pair of wheels, with which the connection was directly made from the piston-rod, to a pin on the outside of the wheel.
Then came the tug of war, for it was necessary to get to the piston and the jammed piston-rod.
He contrived a second chamber, outside of the cylinder, where the then indispensable condensation should take place. Then he gave this cylinder for the first time two heads, and let out the piston-rod through a hole in the upper head, with packing. He used steam on the upper side of the piston as well as the lower, and it will be seen that he came very near to making the modern engine.
There are some spectacles which a man never forgets. The burning of Troy probably seemed a large-sized conflagration to the pious Aeneas, and made an impression on him which he carried away with the feeble Anchises. In the centre of the room, lightly brandishing the piston-rod of a steam-engine, stood Guy Heavystone alone.
Whereas, if you took it easy like this " Here he made a light step forward and placed his open palm gently against the breast of Lncian, who instantly reeled back as if the piston-rod of a steam-engine had touched him, and dropped into the chair. "There!" exclaimed Cashel, standing aside and pointing to him. "It's like pocketing a billiard-ball!"
