And yet, curiously enough, in the collection of critical monographs so well known under the generic title of "English Men of Letters" a series, by the way, which includes Nathaniel Hawthorne and Maria Edgeworth no room or place has hitherto been found for Smollett any more than for Ben Jonson, both of them, surely, considerable Men of Letters in the very strictest and most representative sense of the term.
So far the subject cannot be said to have received adequate treatment; certain of its aspects have been more or less fully discussed in monographs and isolated articles, but we still await a comprehensive study on this most important question.
Another thirteenth century law-book, Le Mirroir des Justices, has been edited by Maitland and W.J. Whittaker for the Selden Society. Of special importance are T. Wright's Political POEMS and SONGS FROM the accession of Edward III., vol. i. During the hundred years, the frontier of the white man's domain had been moved a thousand miles to the south-west and, as ever, there was still friction at the point of contact. The record of the boyhood of our Lincoln has been told in dozens of forms and in hundreds of monographs.
The new political developments of the present, Australian Federation, the Referendum in Switzerland, German Public Finance, the Party system in England and America, and innumerable others, are constantly recorded, discussed and compared in the monographs and technical magazines which circulate through all the universities of the globe.
