It is the moral intention of this great novel to awaken us a little, if it may be for such awakenings are unpleasant to the great cost of the society that we enjoy and profit by, to the labour and sweat of those who support the litter, civilisation, in which we ourselves are so smoothly carried forward.

It was good to lounge in the tent door that evening, and remember that there would be no more dreary awakenings to a day of profitless labor; but perhaps it was the cool night wind and the frosty glitter of the stars that helped to check the rush of hot, hopeful fancies through my brain. I had learned already to distrust any untested offer of prosperity.

Seagrove himself had some rude awakenings. Blount calls Seagrove to Account. Blount was much put out at the fact that Seagrove was believed at Philadelphia when he reported the Creeks to be at peace.

The interesting scenes of these awakenings are thus gratefully recalled by Sanum, a convert of the first revival, in a letter dated Salmas, June 6th, 1859:

More threatening still were the stealthy awakenings of the people, of the great silent multitude whose tongue seemed to be loosening.

Trace any one of the local awakenings back to its source, and you will discover that the interest in spiritual, personal religion, which now overtops and overshadows all other interests in the neighbourhood which has led many wanderers back to Christ's fold which has caused friends to sing aloud for joy, and enemies to stand mute in astonishment which has emptied jails and filled prayer-meetings which has changed the wilderness into a garden, and drawn wondering witnesses from distant lands sprang from some upper or lower room in which two or three unnoticed and unknown believers were wont to meet at stated times for prayer.

During the day the King approached the bed many times: the fever was strong, the awakenings were short; the head was confused, and some marks upon the skin gave tokens of measles, because they extended quickly, and because many people at Versailles and at Paris were known to be, at this time, attacked with that disease.

Now, as was said, to know how he doth this, is that which is needful to be inquired into; for some say he doth it one way, some, he doth it another; and it must be remembered that we are now speaking of the salvation of that man that from new or first awakenings, is coming to God by Christ for life.

These experiences are the rare awakenings of the soul to the realization and use of its own native powers which flow from its divine paternity and origin, and which constitute its birthright and ultimate inheritance.

The power of personal influence, of inspiring private letters, can hardly be overemphasized in studying the remarkable progress of asceticism. Great awakenings in the moral, as in the political or the social world, may be traced to the profound influence of individuals, whose prophetic insight and moral enthusiasm unfold the germ of the larger movements.
