Johnson, wrote Malone in 1783, 'is as correct and elegant in his common conversation as in his writings. He never seems to study either for thoughts or words. When first introduced I was very young; yet he was as accurate in his conversation as if he had been talking to the first scholar in England. Prior's Malone, p. 92. See post, under Aug. 29, 1783. The horses having strayed some distance, we did not get a start till half-past seven on a course of 323 degrees, to a white hill, to see whether there are any springs on the other side; at one mile and a half reached it, but no springs. We went some miles up it, but could find no water, the courses for the water being too sandy and gravelly to retain it.

Mistress of Edward IV. BOSWELL. He describes her penitence in a fine passage. Ib. ch. 26. Malone, in a note on the Life of Boswell under 1749, says that 'this lady was not the celebrated Lady Vane, whose memoirs were given to the public by Dr. Catharine Sedley, the mistress of James II, is described by Macaulay, Hist of Eng. ed. 1874, ii. 323. Dr. Churchill's Poems, Night, ed. 1766, i. 89.

During the Prussian occupation in 1870-71, a sum of 323,950 francs was exacted from the town, and the museum and library, after being valued at a considerable sum, were seized as pledges of payment. Seals were set on the collections, and Prussian soldiery guarded the treasures which had been collected with so much zeal and sacrifice.

It was breaking white water all around when they started. It grew rougher. Chisholm in the 323 was going along at twenty knots when a poker-playing chum came along in his big 1,000-ton destroyer.

BOSWELL. These two quotations are part of the same paragraph, and are not even separated by a word. Ib. p. 6. See ante, i. 453; iii. 323; iv. 276; and v. 32. Some years later he said that 'when Burke lets himself down to jocularity he is in the kennel. Ante, iv. 276. Cicero and Demosthenes, no doubt, were brought in by the passage about Nicholson.

Constantine collected an army of one hundred and twenty thousand men at Thessalonica, and advanced to attack his foe, intrenched in a strong position. The battle was decided in favor of Constantine, who slew thirty-four thousand of his enemies, and took the fortified camp of Licinius, who fled to Byzantium, July, A.D. 323.

At Babylon he was busy with gigantic plans for the future, both of conquest and civilization, when he was suddenly taken ill after a banquet, and died eleven days later, 323 B.C., in the thirty-second year of his age, and the thirteenth of his reign.
