"The sword of Damocles must henceforth be brandished over the entire surface." "The representatives sent on mission are required to conform strictly to the acts of the Committee of Public Safety. Moniteur, XVIII., 291. These two pivots of revolutionary rule outside the Committee were the representatives of the people on missions and the national agents controlling the district committees.
Scores of Congressmen, anxious to refute the idea that the indomitable picket had had anything to do with their action, revealed naively how surely it had. Of the 291 men present, not one man stood squarely up for the right of the hundreds of women who petitioned for justice. Some indirectly and many, inadvertently, however, paid eloquent tribute to the suffrage picket.
The sale of a ship to a foreigner within two years after the ship's construction was made invalid unless about a third of the bounty received be repaid. The total amount paid in mail subventions in 1910 was $1,858,186; in navigation subsidies, $1,291,826. Portugal grants postal subventions of comparatively small amounts to three steamship companies which perform all her mail carrying.
A. 102, c; G. 291, Rem.; H. 450, 1. n. and foot-note 4. DELIRATIO: 'dotage'; a rare word, used by Cic. only here and in Div. 2, 90. ROBUSTOS: 'sturdy'; implying that the sons were grown up. TANTAM: sc. quantam habuit; only a little more emphatic than magnam would have been; see n. on 52. APPIUS: see n. on 16.
The plain facts are evidently that the committee went to Epidauros, obtained the snake, brought it back safely to Rome, and established the sanctuary on the island in the Tiber, where a temple was built and dedicated January 1, B.C. 291.
Some notice of this case will be found in North's "Examen," p. 558; but the copious and interesting note in Ormerod's "History of Cheshire," Vol. iii., p. 291, will best satisfy the reader, who will not fail to be struck by the paragraph with which it is closed-viz., "It is not improbable that Alexander Fitton, who, in the first instance, gained rightful possession of Gawsworth under an acknowledged settlement, was driven headlong into unpremeditated guilt by the production of a revocation by will which Lord Gerard had so long concealed.
On the next day, November 3, 1916, the offensive on the Carso was prosecuted successfully by the Italian troops. An advance of almost a mile eastward brought Italian troops to Point 291 and along the Opacchiasella-Castagnievizza road to within 650 feet of the latter place. On the rest of the front to the sea the Austrians kept up a bombardment of great intensity with artillery of all calibers.
* Col. iv. 14. 2Tim. iv. 11. Philem. 24. + Lardner, Cred. vol. viii. P.291, et seq. These considerations are not to be neglected: but of an argument concerning the genuineness of ancient writings, the substance, undoubtedly, and strength, is ancient testimony.
Fremont did not get a vote in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee; and only 281 in Maryland, 291 in Virginia, and 364 in Kentucky. But Millard Fillmore, running on a platform of America for Americans, almost divided the vote with Buchanan in those states.
Montana, population 376,053, had in 1911 an army of 59,291 well-armed men, warring chiefly upon the big game, and swiftly exterminating it. How long can any of the big game stand before the army of two and one-half million well-armed men, eager and keen to kill, and out to get an equivalent for their annual expenditure in guns, ammunition and other expenses?
