John; which critics say could not have been written by one of the first few Christians because of its Greek transcendentalism and its Platonic tone. I am no judge of the philology, but every human being is a divinely appointed judge of the philosophy: and the Platonic tone seems to me to prove nothing at all.

If Hawthorne were still living he might object to the foregoing argument as a misrepresentation; nor could he be blamed for this, for Ripley, Thoreau, Alcott and other like visionary spirits have so vitiated the significance of Transcendentalism that it ought now to be classed among words of doubtful and uncertain meaning.

Only the exaggerated exaltation of mind attendant on love-making can enable lovers to endure the transcendentalism with which they bore one another. And then the look which makes an arrow of the most trifling phrase, the caress which gives the merest glance a most eloquent meaning how can prosaic pen and ink and paper report these fittingly?

That comfortable philosophy which modern transcendentalism has but dimly shadowed forth that poetic agrarianism, which gives all to each and each to all is the real life of this city of unwork. To each of its dingy dwellers might be not unaptly applied the language of one who, I trust, will pardon me for quoting her beautiful poem in this connection:

At the outset Professor Phelps quotes in full Transcendentalism and How it Strikes a Contemporary as Browning's confession of his aims as an artist. The first of these is Browning's most energetic assertion that the poet is no philosopher concerned with ideas rather than with things with abstractions rather than with actions.

The first seeds of the Manichæan accusation are found in the second volume, but the term is not used in the sense of Albert Pike's Luciferian transcendentalism, but merely as an equivalent of Protestantism coloured by the idea of its connection with the Socinian heresy.

And though the subject broached by Faith, and believed in by me, wuz as interestin' to me as a subject could be, yet I felt then, and feel now, that though transcendentalism may be more agreable talkin' matter, and may be indulged in at times, yet such commonplace subjects as herb drink has to be brung forwards and sort o' hung onto by our minds, in order to anchor 'em as it were to the land of Megumness, where I would fain tarry myself and have my near and dearest dwell.

A little incident in this friendship is so characteristic in the transcendentalism which was then carried into all the affections, that it is worth relating at length.

George Ripley, Bronson Alcott, and Ralph Waldo Emerson evolved New England Transcendentalism, and very early Henry Thoreau added a few bars of harmonious discords to the symphony.

Arrière-pensée in transcendentalism. Its romantic sincerity. Its constructive impotence. Its dependence on common-sense. Its futility. Ideal science is self-justified. Physical science is presupposed in scepticism. It recurs in all understanding of perception. Science contains all trustworthy knowledge.
