It is odd, almost amusing, to note how in this country people of one section apply their local standards to the judgment of people in other sections, very much as an Englishman uses his insular yardstick to measure all the rest of the world.

The landlord stared at him in astonishment; then, suddenly bursting into a loud laugh, he cried, "Why, gentles all, this fine nobleman is nothing but a tailor! ha! ha!" and he put his hands to his fat sides and shook with laughter. "Be silent, sirrah!" thundered Bartlemy; "or I'll break my yardstick over your shoulders!" "Ha! ha! only hear what he says!" laughed the landlord. "A miserable tailor."

Not abstractly eternal as hitherto considered, time and space are relative and finite factors, deriving their measurement validity only in reference to the yardstick of light-velocity. In joining space as a dimensional relativity, time has surrendered age-old claims to a changeless value. Time is now stripped to its rightful nature-a simple essence of ambiguity!

It uses the welfare of man as the yardstick of measure rather than treating the subjects under the head of natural resources. At the present time the productive power of a day's work varies greatly throughout the country.

This was a depressing apartment, in its chill neat emptiness, for it was unfurnished save for a bare deal table, upon which lay a yardstick and a pair of scales. Above this table hung a wicker cage, containing a blue bird, and another wicker cage containing three white pigeons.

Our value-concept must be the yardstick to measure just how fully things and institutions contribute to a full psychological life. We must know more of the meaning of progress. The domination of society by one economic class has for its chief evil the thwarting of the instinct life of the subordinate class and the perversion of the upper class.

It was a deliberate attack on the mysticism of the Maeterlinck school an attack from the citadel of positive science upon the wonder- dreamers, but an attack nevertheless that retained much of beauty and wonder of the sort compatible with ascertained fact. It was a little later that he followed up the attack with two short essays, "The Wonder- Dreamers" and "The Yardstick of the Ego."

"Your articles are so long," Bok would explain. "Long?" Doctor Briggs would echo. "You don't measure theological discussions by the yardstick, young man." "Perhaps not," the young assembler would maintain. But we have to do some measuring here by the composition-stick, just the same." And the Union Seminary theologian was never able successfully, to vault that hurdle!

The truth is that the agreeable people are pretty evenly distributed over the country, and one's enjoyment of them is heightened not only by their differences of manner, but by the different, ways in which they look at life, unless he insists upon applying everywhere the yardstick of his own locality.
