LETTER XLI. Clarissa to Miss Howe. Gives the particulars of the overheard conversation. Thinks her prospects a little mended. Is willing to compound for tolerable appearances, and to hope, when reason for hope offers. LETTER XLII. Miss Howe to Clarissa. Her scheme of Mrs. Townsend. Is not for encouraging dealers in prohibited goods; and why.

We need not wonder, therefore, that in Egypt the worship of the other gods was overshadowed by that of Osiris, and that while they were revered each in his own district, he and his divine partner Isis were adored in all. XLI. Isis THE ORIGINAL meaning of the goddess Isis is still more difficult to determine than that of her brother and husband Osiris.

De Vita Propria, ch. xli. p. 149. De Utilitate, p. 350. De Utilitate, p. 357: "Nam in urbe nec collegium recipere volebat nec cum aliquo ex illis artem exercere licebat et sine illis difficillimum erat." He writes thus while describing this particular visit to Milan. Ill fortune seems to have pursued the whole family in their relations with learned societies.

So Hor: castis lucis. Penetrali, viz. the sacred vehicle. Dignatur. Deems worthy of her visits. Templo, sc. the sacred grove. Numen ipsum. I earnestly pressed her to let me be favoured with a sight of this paper, torn as it was. And, after some hesitation, she withdrew, and sent it to me by Dorcas. I perused it again.

Why do you wish me to get into trouble? Why do you call upon the gods to ruin me? If this is your way of returning a kindness, what would you do if you were exacting repayment of a debt? XLI. Above all, therefore, my Liberalis, let us learn to live calmly under an obligation to others, and watch for opportunities of repaying our debt without manufacturing them.

In order that the fitness or unfitness of this application of the prophecy may be made apparent, and evident, we will new lay before the reader this famous prophecy, part by part, each part accompanied by the Jewish interpretation. Isaiah xli.
