Certain men you'd know their names, but such things are better forgotten were waiting to attach the ships the Websters had on the ways, and if the ships were attached there would be nothing left for the Websters but stools in somebody's counting-house.

It had always been against the traditions of the Websters to spend money freely and Ellen, a Webster to the core, resented his lack of prudence; furthermore the articles were useless and cluttered up the house.

Had her estate been high she would have been, at the age of forty-two, a youthful and pretty woman. As it was, she was merely an old maid with a patrician profile. She went down-stairs to occupy her chair in the parlor, her seat at the table, to be overlooked by the fine people who took no interest whatever in the "Websters' companion." She hated them all.

"An' he loves you, no doubt," continued the old woman with a laugh. "At least he's probably told you so." "No, he hasn't." "Oh-ho! He hasn't, eh?" "No." "An' never will," shouted the harpy triumphantly. "He ain't marryin' no Websters don't you think it for one minute. He's just makin' a fool of you. That's his idea of revenge your Christian gentleman!" She rubbed her dank hands together.

Her future would unquestionably be lonely, since she must leave behind her not only the man she loved but the home about which her fondest dreams centered. Nevertheless, she had never lacked courage to do what must be done; and in the present emergency the pride of the Websters came surging to re-enforce her in her purpose. Nobody must know she was going away nobody.

At one time, at least, the ancestors of all these Alvins and Alvas, Loveinas, Lovelands, and Breedloves, must have taken serious council and found a certain poetry in these denominations; that must have been, then, their form of literature. But still times change; and their next descendants, the George Washingtons and Daniel Websters, will at least be clear upon the point.

"The Chinaman seemed to suspect from the boy's long face that all was not as it should be, and he squeezed more or less of the truth out of the young fellow, had him up to the Hong again, gave him various gifts, and sent him back to America with five teak-wood chests. Just five ordinary teak-wood chests but in those teak-wood chests, Ben, was the money that put the Websters on their feet again.

"Lathrop as supercargo? He's too young. He's only a lad." "We can get no one else off-hand who has so good an education," said Roger. "He can write a fair-copy, cipher, and keep books. I'll warrant, Mr. Johnston, that not even you can catch him napping with a problem in tare and tret. Above all, the Websters know him well and will be glad to see him climb." "Hm! I'm doubtful well, very well.

Nothing enters a close Hand. Neir is the Kirtle, but neirer is the Sark. Need hes no law. No man may puind for unkindnesse. Neirest to the Kirk, farthest fra God. Need makes Virtue. Never rade, never fell. Nothing is difficile to a weill willed man. Need gars naked men run, and sorrow gars Websters spin. No man can seek his marrow in the Kirn, so weil as he that hes bin in it himself.

Steam-engines, to the number of 40,191, and of 1,215,711 horse-power all of the stationary variety, and exclusive of nearly half as many that traverse the country and may be classed among the rural population have succeeded the websters and spinners who were wont to clothe all the world and his wife, and who survive only in the surnames of some of our statesmen and financiers.
