The bad conduct of his Abban, and the warlike state of the country, prevented his reaching the "Wady Nogal," which, under more favourable circumstances and with more ample leisure than our plans allowed him, he conceives to be a work of little difficulty and no danger.

Four of these vessels the Tamai, El Teb, the Metemma, and the Abu Klea; and three steamers the Kaibar, Dal, and Akasha, which it was proposed to arm had, since 1885, patrolled the river from Assuan to Wady Halfa, and assisted in protecting the frontier from Dervish raids. All seven were now collected at the foot of the Second Cataract, and awaited the rise of the river to attempt the passage.

Oudney determined in the mean time to visit Wady Shiati, whilst Mr. Hillman was sent back to Mourzouk, to send down supplies, and to take charge of the property. They arranged about the fare for their camels, and made every preparation for their immediate departure.

We have seen that Gordon made several specific demands in the first six weeks of his stay at Khartoum that is, in the short period before communication was cut off. He wanted Zebehr, 200 troops at Berber, or even at Wady Halfa, and the opening of the route from Souakim to the Nile.

Voltaire picked up something from the ground and looked at it. "Kaffar's," he said. "Look, Mr. Blake; do you recognize this?" I looked and saw a finely-worked neckcloth, on which was written in Arabic characters the words "Aba Wady Kaffar." It had every appearance of being soiled by severe wrenching, and on it were spots of blood.

Nine hours' journey brought us to the valley of Amjam, where there was a khafilah of senna encamped among the trees. Water rather bitter, however may be found here in shallow excavations; and the whole place, with its patches of herbage, is highly refreshing to the eye. There are two new trees in this wady, both interesting; the Ghurdok and the Ajdaree.

Wady Ghudwah is a single town with gardens, and the other features common to all the Fezzan oases. Sebha includes two towns, having a considerable population, with gardens and date-palms. Bouanees includes three towns, well peopled, and has immense numbers of date-palms.

We moved on late this morning up Wady Aroukeen, one hour and a-half, to a place where we have better feeding for the camels; but it was scarcely worth the trouble of loading and unloading, as the animals could have been led up here to this portion of the wady. Wady Aroukeen is in every respect a desirable place for the resting-place of a caravan.

Sebhah and Zeghen are all Arabs and Moors. The Touaricks are found in the Wady Ghurbee, and are occupied chiefly in a pastoral life, leading their flocks through open Desert. Some live in the villages of The Wady. But these Touaricks are not subjects of the chieftains of Ghat. The Negroes begin at Mourzuk, and extend south in all the districts of Fezzan, as far as the Tibboos.

The Master saw him in the wady, dimly visible through the ghostly white sand-shrouds spinning in the blue-whipped fire-glare. There on hands and knees the lieutenant was huddled. With eager hands he was tearing the hood of a za'abut a rough, woolen slave cloak, patched and ragged from the face of a prostrate figure more than half snowed under a sand-drift. "Nom de Dieu!" the Master heard him cry.
