Renew once more thy generous youth, half perish'd; Be wiser, kindlier, better than thou art! And first, in fitting meekness, offer well All earnest, candid prayers, to be forgiven For worldly, harsh, unjust, unlovable Thoughts and suspicions against man and Heaven!
The marriage oath is farcical. A woman is made to swear to love a man who will probably prove unlovable, to honour a man who is as likely as not to be undeserving of honour, and to obey a man who may be incapable of judging what is best either for himself or her. I have no respect for the ages that uphold such nonsense. There was never any need to bind us with an oath.
Nor was I unaware of certain unlovable traits that were unavoidably developing in my own self under these influences. And while human nature was thus growing smaller, the human world as a whole was growing larger, more complex, more heartless, and more interesting. The striking thing was that it was not a world of piety. I spoke to scores of people and I saw tens of thousands.
My one relief was afforded by Traveler he begged so hard to go to London with me, I could not resist him. The dog always sleeps in my room. Who first called a dog a dumb creature? It must have been a man, I think and a thoroughly unlovable man, too, from a dog's point of view. Soon after ten, on the morning of the 28th, she entered my sitting-room.
And so it came that Richard grew up and continued without an attachment or a friendship or a purpose; and with a distrust of men in the gross promoted to feather-edge. Altogether he should be called as loveless, not to say as, unlovable, a character as any you might encounter, and search throughout a summer's day.
Since those days he had become a dark morose figure, living apart from men, never going to confession, seldom going to Mass, unloving and unlovable. There was only one other person in the parish more unloved. That was the woman called Paulette Dubois, who lived in the little house at the outer gate of the Manor.
Andy thought hard. There was certainly a check to his show career unless he secured the sanction and cooperation of his aunt. Judging from existing circumstances, Andy utterly despaired of moving his unlovable, stubborn-minded relative towards any action that would favor him. Especially was this true after he had defied her authority and run away from home. "If Mr.
"He wouldn't search, so don't worry," replied Cyril quietly, and the two looked at each other and knew that it was so. There, in the cedar hollow, then, lived Olive Lord, an angry, resentful, little creature weighed down by a fierce sense of injury. Her gloomy young heart was visited by frequent storms and she looked as unlovable as she was unloved.
Dickens was capable of loving all men; but he refused to love all opinions. The modern humanitarian can love all opinions, but he cannot love all men; he seems, sometimes, in the ecstasy of his humanitarianism, even to hate them all. He can love all opinions, including the opinion that men are unlovable.
And yet he was young he had married a good wife he might mend. At present, plain and indisputable, his character stood good-natured, kindly perhaps not even unlovable but destitute of the very foundations of all that constitutes worth in a man or woman either truthfulness, independence, honor, honesty.
