The same bright yet tender tint reddened the crab-apple and the wild-cherry; the tomtits and the robins chirped as before, among the bushes, and, as in the previous year, one heard the sound of the beechnuts and acorns dropping on the rocky paths.
It was a regular feast-land for the birds; there were no such buds anywhere else to peck at, for so the tomtits and bullfinches thought; no such strawberries for the blackbirds and thrushes; and as to the elder-berries down by the pond, the starlings used to come in flocks to strip them off, and then carelessly leave ever so many wasting upon the ground.
At other seasons he had for his tribute one out of every hundred birds that flew across the Island on their way to Ireland tomtits, pee-wits, linnets, siskins, starlings, martins, wrens and tender young barn owls.
Ruby's eyes, being set free from the fascination of the owl's stare, now made him aware of the fact that hundreds of birds of all kinds crows, magpies, sparrows, tomtits, owls, larks, mavises, blackbirds, etcetera, etcetera were fluttering round the lantern outside, apparently bent on ascertaining the nature of the wonderful light within.
"Oh, now," said Terry, "we can give the dear little song-birds their breakfast! Just see how they are running like little chickens to be fed!" However, only now was the fighting to begin. The thrushes pecked the blackbirds, and the blackbirds flew at the thrushes, and both beat back the little redbreasts and tomtits. "Rascals!" said Turly; "they are every bit as bad as the crows!"
The fir-trees, shaggy and formidable, seemed especially verdant and welcoming to the tide of sunlight that flowed to their feet, and lay there collected in the little hollows about their roots. The woodpecker could be heard amidst the pines, and daws, tomtits and bullfinches carolled merrily as they spread their wings and preened their plumage in the sun.
I was never able to know exactly how many aviaries he possessed, for I was always finding a fresh one curiously hidden in some neglected corner. He liked to mix up all sorts of birds together, such as pigeons, doves tame and wild blackbirds, linnets, canaries, chaffinches, sparrows, tomtits no, the tomtits had been turned out. I asked why.
They do not store a quantity of provision in one place like the squirrels, but deposit a tidbit here and there, wedging it tightly into a crevice by hammering it with their stout bills. Of course, the woodpeckers and tomtits secure many of these half-hidden goodies, but Master Nuthatch does not mind that, for he evens up the theft by appropriating their stores when he finds them.
"I should have to stir them up a good deal before I could do it," I replied. "It would be a hard thing to shoot an eagle with an arrow. If you want a stuffed bird to bequeath, you'd better use a rifle." "A rifle!" exclaimed Pepton. "There would be no glory in that. There are lots of birds shot with rifles eagles, hawks, wild geese, tomtits " "Oh, no!" I interrupted, "not tomtits."
This attracted the notice of the men, and they followed them to see what could be the matter. “By and by, the bear saw the terrible huntsmen coming, led on by his little enemies, the tomtits. He sprang forward, and ran from one side of the glen to the other; but he could not escape. They shot him with two bullets through his head.
