I did splendid, and wuz prospered perfectly amazing and I went home feelin' as happy and proud as a king or a zar. And the next Tuesday evenin' we had the pound party. They concluded to have it to our house. And Thomas Jefferson and Maggie, and Tirzah Ann and Whitefield came home early in the afternoon to help trim the parlor and setin' room with evergreens and everlastin' posies, and fern leaves.
What would the Christopher Columbus World's Fair care for the particular make of Thomas J's night-shirts? That had bigger things on its old mind than to stop and admire a particular posey or runnin' vine worked on a man's nightly bosom. Yes, indeed! But Tirzah Ann felt jest that way, and I couldn't make her over at that late day, even if I had time to tackle the job.
You can imagine how its music fairly shakes the ground and carries you off your feet, seemin'ly like the very music of the spears. Good land! what's Tirzah Ann's organ compared to it? And I thought that wuz as good as any they make, the agent said it wuz; we paid over sixty dollars for it.
"Come!" she said, in the same enforced whisper, "let us look at him together once more only once then help thou thy servants, Lord!" They crossed the street hand in hand ghostly-quick, ghostly-still. When their shadows fell upon him, they stopped. One of his hands was lying out upon the step palm up. Tirzah fell upon her knees, and would have kissed it; but the mother drew her back.
And the very next forenoon Whitfield and Tirzah Ann and little Delight come to spend the day. Her name is Anna Tirzah, but I called her Heart's Delight, she wuz so sweet and pretty, and we've shortened it into Delight.
Sargent's "Mother and Child" looked first-rate in its cool, soft colors. They put me in mind a good deal of Tirzah Ann and Babe. And "The Delaware Valley" and "A Gray Lowery Day," by Mr. George Inness, impressed me wonderfully. Many a day like it have I passed through in Jonesville. "Hard Times," also in a American department, wuz dretful impressive.
And Zelophehad the son of Hepher had no sons, but daughters: and the names of the daughters of Zelophehad were Mahlah, and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. These are the families of Manasseh, and those that were numbered of them, fifty and two thousand and seven hundred.
It is slow knittin' shells are dretful slow anyway and she wuz too proud sperited to have 'em plain clam-shell pattern, which are bigger and coarser; she had to have 'em oyster-shell pattern, in ridges. Wall, as I say, I felt dubersome, but I spoke up cheerful on the outside "If you git your stockin's done, Tirzah Ann, you must be sure and come." And she said she would.
Whitfield and Tirzah Ann had gone santerin' off some time before. The hour and the seen wuz both beautiful and soothin'. The little streets between the houses stretched out on every side, some on 'em bordered with trees.
Another day of dread at length came the day the mother, under impulsion of duty, at last told Tirzah the name of their ailment; and the two, in agony of despair, prayed that the end might come quickly.
