It cannot help being a paying concern, I should think, to judge by the traffic that passed me in the course of this day, for I was hardly ever out of sight of a caravan. It was an ideal day for desert travelling a grey, sunless sky, a gentle breeze.

Sleeping in night-mare's thunderstorm-wove lap, On sunless mountain high above the pole; With ice for sheets, and lightning for a cap, And tons of loadstones weighing on his soul; And eye out-stretched upon some vasty map Of uncouth worlds, which ever onward roll To infinite like Revelation's scroll.

The small Christian had no suspicion that her whole life had been a period of chastening that few children indeed had to live in such a sunless atmosphere as hers. Alice threw down the newspaper, gazed from the window into the back-yard of the next house, saw nothing but an elderly man-servant brushing a garment, and turned upon Sophy. "Why don't you hang up your jacket, miss?" she said, sharply.

Once far and wide the unbroken forests spread Their lonely waste, mysterious and dread Forest, whose echoes never had been stirred By the sweet music of an English word; Where only rang the red-browed hunter's yell, And the wolf's howl through the dark sunless dell. Now fruitful fields and waving orchard trees Spread their rich treasures to the summer breeze.

Its pleasant pastures, its black-timbered homesteads, its prim little townships looking down on inlets of purple water, were then but a wild waste of heather and sand, girt along the coast with a sunless woodland broken here and there by meadows that crept down to the marshes and the sea.

Therefore none of us were in her way, and coming out of our circle, without turning to us, she said aloud, and with indescribable contempt: "Rascals! . . . Rabble!" . . . Then she went away. We remained standing in the centre of the yard, in the mud, under the rain and the gray, sunless sky. . . . Then we all went back silently to our damp, stony ditch.

Even for Cumbria it was a chill and sunless winter. No bracing frosts, and persistent northwesterly winds. Day after day the rain, which was snow on the heights, poured down. Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite rose till they mingled in one vast lake. The streams thundered from the fells; every road was a water-course. Netta lost flesh and appetite.

It is characteristic of the Greek temperament, that the personages of the Greek poetry ever bid a last lingering and half-reluctant farewell to the sun. There is a magnificent fulness of life in those children of the beautiful West; the sun is to them as a familiar friend the affliction or the terror of Hades is in the thought that its fields are sunless.

I wish all the hard-worked people at home, who lead joyless lives in sunless alleys, could just have one such day, and enjoy it as I did, that they might know how fair God's earth is, and how far fairer His Paradise must be, if even from this we cannot conceive "of the things which He hath prepared for them that love Him."

Just as a sunless landscape is smitten into sudden beauty by a burst of sunshine which heightens the colouring of the flowers on the river's bank, and is flashed back from every silvery ripple on the stream, so the faith which brings the life of Christ into the life of the Christian makes him more of a man than he was before. So, there will be infinite variety in the resulting characters.
