Was it the scream of the sea-mew, the shriek of the frigate-bird, or the hoarse note of the nelly? None of these. The boy-sailor was acquainted with the cries of all three, and of many other sea-birds besides. It was not the call of a bird that had fallen so unexpectedly on his ear, but a note of far different intonation. It more resembled a voice, a human voice, the voice of a child!
So saying he strode onwards, leaving the youth, who had not yet passed eighteen summers, to his discontented solitude and ill-temper. "Understand you! I wonder who does, ever did, or ever will; perched up here like a sea-mew, and not having touched land for five weeks! 'Beyond that point! I'll be even with him, for I wo'n't walk to that point: I'll just stay in the one spot."
Sometimes throughout the whole season father and daughter would only meet by chance on some unexpected visit, or coming into a harbor on different yachts. "Isn't that the Sea-Mew's flag?" Christine would say languidly. "I rather think my father is on board." And then, perhaps, some amiable hostess in need of an extra man would send the launch to the Sea-Mew to bring Mr.
And through the waves of awe and rapture that swept over him came faintly down to him, as from some dim world left behind, the bells of Venice, and the thin cry of the sea-mew rejoicing with him. Can we call a life sad which has had in it one such blessed hour? Luminous day followed luminous day, and the nights also were full of light. His work was nothing to him.
Frank! you have a bad habit of letting your tongue run away with you. Don't repeat that stupid nickname when you talk of my good friend, Richard Wardour." "Your good friend? Crayford! your liking for that man amazes me." Crayford laid his hand kindly on Frank's shoulder. Of all the officers of the Sea-mew, Crayford's favorite was Frank. "Why should it amaze you?" he asked.
Aldersley, as Clara seems to have forgotten to do it for me. I am Mrs. Crayford. My husband is Lieutenant Crayford, of the Wanderer. Do you belong to that ship?" "I have not the honor, Mrs. Crayford. I belong to the Sea-mew." Mrs. Crayford's superb eyes looked shrewdly backward and forward between Clara and Francis Aldersley, and saw the untold sequel to Clara's story.
