The consequence was, that, though the king had great and brilliant talents, Voltaire had such a superiority that his majesty could not bear it; and the poet was dismissed, or escaped, from that court. In the reign of James I. of England, Crichton, Lord Sanquhar, a peer of Scotland, from a vain ambition to excel a fencing-master in his own art, played at rapier and dagger with him.
Bertram readily assented to the motion of his faithful friend, but, on looking at the bed, felt repugnance to trust himself undressed to Mrs. Mac-Guffog's clean sheets. 'I'm muckle o' your opinion, Captain, said Dandie. 'Od, this bed looks as if a' the colliers in Sanquhar had been in't thegither.
The lions roared on the hills of Sanquhar, and the king's throne trembled; within a few years the monarch and his dynasty had disappeared from the earth. These Covenanters prepared also another declaration which was called the Queensferry Paper. It contained the following statement of the principles, for which they contended: "The avowal of the Scriptures as the only rule of faith and action;
And to conclude, we hope after this none will blame us for, or offend at our rewarding these that are against us as they have done to us as the Lord gives opportunity. This is not to exclude any that have declined, if they be willing to give satisfaction according to the degree of their offence. Given at Sanquhar, June 22nd, 1680.
A short month before his death, the intrepid Cameron, his brother Michael, and some twenty other covenanters, armed and on horseback, posted up at the market cross of the burgh of SANQUHAR, the "Sanquhar Declaration" in which are contained these ever memorable words:
The Bicentenary of the SANQUHAR DECLARATION was commemorated with appropriate services, upwards of 4000 persons of different religious denominations convening at the ancient burgh of Sanquhar for this purpose.
Burns must have dreamed of Queen Mary when duty brought him to Sanquhar; and Renwick would have been a person to appeal to him, because of his youth and good looks, and because the "pretty lad" was the last martyr to the Covenant. But perhaps he thought most of all of that Admirable Crichton who was born at Sanquhar, not in the castle of his wild and brilliant family, but at Eliock House.
Among other things the common soldiers were given the right to carry these laws into effect in other words, to murder and plunder according to their own will and pleasure. On 22nd June 1680 twenty armed horsemen rode up the main street of the burgh of Sanquhar.
Men remember the fatal case of Lord Sanquhar, hanged for the murder of a fencing-master; and exclaim, they will not have their wives whored, and their property stolen, by the nobility of Scotland." "And all this is laid to my door!" said Nigel; "my exculpation is easy." "I trust so, my lord," said Heriot; "nay, in this particular, I do not doubt it.
The troop was headed by Richard Cameron and his brother Michael, who, dismounting, nailed to the cross a paper which the latter read aloud. It was the famous "Declaration of Sanquhar," in which Charles Stuart was publicly disowned.
