Professor Farmer, the botanist, investigates cancer, and the ordinary educated man, familiar though he is with their general results, would find it hard to say which were the chemists and which the physicists among Professors Dewar and Ramsey Lord Rayleigh and Curie. The classification of sciences that was such a solemn business to our grandfathers is now merely a mental obstruction.
Lord Rayleigh, discussing the same problem, premises that when a bird is soaring the air cannot be moving uniformly and horizontally. Then comes the natural question, Is it moving in ascending currents? Lord Rayleigh has frequently noticed such currents, particularly above a cliff facing the wind.
Burial reforms, in the interests of health and economy, have been introduced, and nursing, elevated into a science, has become an honourable profession for cultured women. In 1894 that eminent savant Lord Rayleigh brought before the British Association his discovery of a hitherto unknown constituent in the atmosphere.

A beam of light was intercepted by two of Nicol's prisms, one of which acted as a polarizer and the other as an analyzer of the light, so that no light was able to pass through both on to the screen.

Lord Rayleigh lately delivered a lecture at the Royal Institution upon "The Colors of Thin Plates," a term which he explained was applied to thin films of substances, such as oily films on the surface of water or the equally familiar soap bubble.
Unquestionably, the able mathematicians Lord Rayleigh, Stokes, or Maxwell, if the problem was submitted to them, would start directly to work, and deduce by so called "higher mathematics" the required motions the molecules would have to undergo to accomplish this marvelous task the same as they have established the diameter of the supposed molecules, their velocity, distance apart, and number of bombardments, without any shadow of positive proof that any such things as molecules exist.
The usual warm welcome at Rayleigh House, with Mary there to meet me, and Emily Strutt. I wasn't very tired when I first arrived, but fatigue came out on me like a rash afterwards. I got more tired every day, and ended by having a sort of breakdown. This rather spoilt my holiday, but it was very nice seeing people again.
Of course the prominent figure at our meetings was Lord Rayleigh; and I do not think that any person could possibly have been present at those meetings of the British Association without feeling an intense personal admiration for this man, and an affection for the way in which he maintained the position of an English gentleman and the credit of an English scientific body, to the astonishment and delight of every one present.
The remainder of the lecture was devoted to an explanation of the determination of the chromatic relations of the colors of the spectrum. Lord Rayleigh at this point made a rather startling statement that any color can be produced by two other colors.
