He had trod upon rainbows and been waited upon by spectral mists. The voices of winds and waters were in his heart, and he passionately believed in God. But it was the God of his own creed jealous, just and awful in that inconceivable holiness which charges his angels with folly and detects impurity in the sinless heavens.
Incandescent rainbows shone above it, blue, red, and golden lights played about it; but the stream itself was white, ineffable. Beautiful, beautiful tears, flow on no dull, leaden rain, no mere monotonous deluge, but a living, singing fountain, crowned with such rainbows as hang roses and stars in the fine mist of samite waterfalls, irradiated by gleaming shafts of lovely anger and scorn. Like Northern Lights on autumn evenings, the maiden's eyes pierced Narcissus through and through with many-coloured spears.
The second fawn followed her instantly; but the heedless one barely swung his head to see where she was going, and then came on towards the light, staring and stamping in foolish wonder.
