If it were simply a receptacle for the ashes from the fire-grates, no harm would result, but as all kinds of organic matter are cast in and often allowed to remain for weeks to rot and putrefy, it becomes a regular pest box, and to it often may be traced sickness and death. It would be a wise sanitary measure if every constructed ash pit were abolished.
They are then allowed to putrefy, in order to get rid of the animal matter, and the red coral is the skeleton that is left. In the case of the white coral, the skeleton is more complete. In the red coral, the skeleton belongs to the whole; in the white coral there is a special skeleton for every one of these polypes in addition to that for the whole body.
Grayness and grisliness have this difference; grayness is only in the head, but grisliness all over the body. Q. Why do horses grow grisly and gray? A. Because they are for the most part in the sun, and heat naturally causes putrefaction; therefore the matter of hair doth putrefy, and in consequence they are quickly peeled. Q. Why do men get bald, and trees let fall their leaves in winter?
You tell me that these are generated in the dead flesh; but if I put similar bodies, while quite fresh, into a jar, and tie some fine gauze over the top of the jar, not a maggot makes its appearance, while the dead substances, nevertheless, putrefy just in the same way as before.
A tiger had killed a goat the day before; he had been driven away in the act of sucking the blood, and not finding it safe or prudent to return, the goat remained in the same place where he had killed it; it had begun to putrefy, and the vultures had arrived that morning to claim the savoury morsel.
Stay either to putrefy with pleasure or to be embalmed in dulness? Nay, you do not know me! I said to myself to-night, "If I perish in this world it will be because I was too far ahead of my environment that and that only. It will be because I was pure, single-hearted, consecrated, and because of such you neither know nor care." Do I fear to say that?
There are some who affirm that at the moment he gave up his spirit seven devils were seen in his chamber. As soon as he was dead his body began to putrefy and his mouth to foam like a kettle over the fire, which continued as long as it was on earth. The body swelled up so that it lost all human form. It was nearly as broad as it was long.
That running water is live water it is sweet and fresh, but if it is kept standing it begins to putrefy, its life is gone from it, and a sort of death comes over it, and makes it foul, and unwholesome, and unfit to drink. This is a deep matter, this, how there is a sort of life in every thing, even to the stones under our feet.
It is a matter of everyday experience that it is difficult to prevent many articles of food from becoming covered with mould; that fruit, sound enough to all appearance, often contains grubs at the core; that meat, left to itself in the air, is apt to putrefy and swarm with maggots.
The blood of those sacrificed to the gods was allowed to putrefy in this great bowl which has recently passed into the hands of the English, and is now in London and leaves of certain herbs being added it was considered valuable as a fetish medicine.
