Now, while flying along in the cars so fast that the trip from Chicago to San Francisco takes but three days, it is hard to believe that little more than thirty years ago travellers in the slow-moving "prairie-schooner" took over five months to cover this same distance.
'The March of Progress that might be better as a broad working basis, although " She saw the "lady" seated on the cogged wheel beneath the factory chimney and stopped. "'The Prairie-Schooner' 'The Bridging of the Mississippi' 'The Last of the Buffaloes' The Corner-Stones of New Capitols' " pursued Daffingdon brokenly. "Would you care very much for that sort of thing?" asked Virgilia. "No."
The señora herself stood staring, wide-eyed and curious. Ana Vigil, her eldest girl, was pointing. Attention seemed to be directed toward something at the foot of the hill behind Jane's house, and she turned to see what was going on there. A covered wagon, of the prairie-schooner type, was drawn up at the foot of the rise.
The bed was of the old prairie-schooner style, with the bottom boat-shaped and the ribs on the outside. My first camp for the return journey over the old trail was made in my own dooryard at Puyallup. This was maintained for several days to give the wagon and team a trial. After the weak points had been strengthened and everything pronounced to be in order, I left home for the long trip.
Lieutenant Hallowell had a canvas or wagon-sheet cover fitted over his wagon: stretched tightly upon bows and puckered to enclose the rear end with the exception of a hole in the middle there about the size of one's head. Now the spring wagon looked like a small prairie-schooner or emigrant outfit.
"'No, and I should say the outfit wasn't very far ahead, either, replied Dean. "And so it was. In a short time we caught up with a kind of 'prairie-schooner' wagon, and found that a pioneer with his family had dared the wilderness of the Canadian forest to wrest a living from the earth.
Many of the Mexicans and a few of the South Americans came overland, while nearly all of those coming from Oregon territory, whither many emigrants had gone from the States during the past few years, made the journey southward to Sacramento City the same way they had crossed the great plains and the mountains, when they had sought new homes in the Great Northwest a few years before that is, by way of the prairie-schooner, afoot and on horseback, traveling in small companies for mutual protection.
If you're hangin' around here when I get through buyin' them things I'll be settin' them up to you. If I've got anything left." He abruptly broke off and urged his pony about, leaving the puncher to look after him speculatively. Two hours later he returned, driving two horses which were hitched to a wagon of the "prairie-schooner" variety.
Geraniums bloomed on the window-sills, and some young cottonwoods grew greenly at the door. The scarlet Navajo blanket, which had been Lola's inheritance from the prairie-schooner, was spread across a couch, and gave a final note of warmth and comfort to the low room, now plastered in adobe from ceiling to floor.
But the second driver halted his team and leaned out from his seat to take the hand which Hunt extended him. "We'll try the short route," he said. "Good-by," the captain bade him; "good luck." The man called to his lead span; the great yokes creaked and the front wheels whined against the wagon-box as the animals swung the prairie-schooner to the west.
