Returning to Florence in 1495, he was called next year to Rome, where he lived till 1501, producing works which displayed his extraordinary genius, the most important of them being the Pieta di San Pietro . Again returning to Florence, he carved his first David from an immense block of Carrara marble.
He haunted the galleries and gardens where broken fragments of antique and modern marbles were to be seen, and stood long before the "Pieta" of Michelangelo in the Church of Santa Croce, wondering if he could ever do as well.
The inside of the church disappointed me, though no doubt I should have been wonderstruck had I seen it a month ago. Legend says, that in order to study the nude for a Christ, she drew from the corpse of a nun which might account for the weak stiffness of her design. Fra Paolo, though there is no record of his having taught her, left her as a legacy the designs and cartoons of Fra Bartolommeo, one of which, the Pieta, she has evidently made use of in the painting in the Belle Arti.
