It was like a man who feels his grip relaxing on some attacking thing he has been holding by the throat. He followed her hastily. 'Must you go in? And none of us have paid our respects yet to those phloxes in the back garden? Oh woman flighty woman!

The garden, instead of being the old-fashioned medley of phloxes, lavender bushes, monthly roses, gooseberry trees, herbs, and pampas grass, with which the farmers' wives of Long Whindale loved to fill their little front enclosures, was trimly laid down in turf dotted with neat flower-beds, full at the moment we are writing of with orderly patches of scarlet and purple anemones, wallflowers, and pansies.

In a very brief time the dahlias and phloxes and lilies have all disappeared, and in their place the coarse-growing docks and nettles and thistles have raised their heads aloft to monopolize air and space and sunshine. Exactly the same struggle is always taking place in the fields and woods and moors around us, and especially in the spots made over to pure nature.

A frame for Margaret carnations, early asters, and experiments in seedling Dahlias and chrysanthemums will be quite enough. The woman who lives all the year in the country can so manage that her spring bulbs and hardy borders, together with the roses, last well into July. After this the annuals must be depended upon for ground colour, and to supplement the phloxes, gladioli, Dahlias, and the like.

The evening light colored huge bosquets of petunias, which stood with their white or crimson faces looking westward, as if they were thinking creatures. It illumined flame-colored verbenas, and tall columns of pink and snowy phloxes, and hedges of August roses, making them radiant as the flowers of a dream. The group in the summer-house requires more particular attention.

Every now and then his eye travelled vaguely past a cottage garden, gay with the pinks and carmines of the phloxes, into the cool browns and bluish-grays of the raftered room beyond; babies toddled across the road, with stooping mothers in their train; the whole air and scene seemed to be suffused with suggestions of the pathetic expansiveness and helplessness of human existence, which generation after generation, is still so vulnerable, so confiding, so eager.

Bessie sat with her hands on her lap and her face turned towards the open door. Beyond the cherry-red phloxes outside it, the ground fell rapidly to the village, rising again beyond the houses to a great stubble field, newly shorn.

Phloxes and marigolds grew untidily about their doorways, and straggly roses, starved a little by the chalk soil, looked in at their latticed windows. They were, however, comparatively modern and comfortable, with two bedrooms above and two living-rooms below, far superior to the older and more picturesque cottages in the main street.

"Phloxes," she answered "I've got all kinds and colours crimson, white, mauve, pink, and magenta. Those which you can see from where you sit are the crimson ones father's favourites. I wish you could get out and look at the Virginian creeper it's lovely just now quite a blaze of scarlet all over the cottage. And the Michaelmas daisies are coming on finely."

It always reminds the observer of the color of the species to which the variety belongs, being bluish in violets and harebells, reddish in godetias and phloxes, in Silene Armeria and many others. It proves that the original color quality of the species has not wholly, but only partly disappeared.
