We turn to the eighteenth century, and primarily to the school of thinkers called 'philosophes' in France, for the fullest and most enthusiastic statement of progress as a gospel. It is, of course, European, as all the greatest advances of thought have been; and German thinkers, as well as English, stand with the French in the vanguard.
Specimens of his writing, and a fac-simile of the drawings in his book of Abraham, may be seen in Salmon's "Bibliotheque des Philosophes Chimiques." The writer of the article, "Flamel," in the "Biographie Universelle," says that, for a hundred years after the death of Flamel, many of the adepts believed that he was still alive, and that he would live for upwards of six hundred years.
Chaudon and Nonnotte prepared a series of articles, arranged in the form of a dictionary, in which the Catholic doctrine is set forth, sometimes clearly and forcibly. Joseph, also his intimacy with Charles's friend Bulkeley, who attended his death-bed, all seem rather to point to the author of 'L'Esprit des Lois. The philosophes, for a moment, seem to have expected to find in Prince Charlie the 'philosopher-king' of Plato's dream! The Prince's distinguished friends unluckily did not succeed in inspiring him with common sense.
"Moreover, our master, the King, is obstinate; he sometimes speaks of Saint- Germain as a person of illustrious birth." The age was skeptical, unscientific, and, by reaction, credulous. The philosophes, Hume, Voltaire, and others, were exposing, like an ingenious American gentleman, "the mistakes of Moses."
It was nearly a fortnight after her mother's funeral that I saw Natalia Haldin for the last time. In those silent, sombre days the doors of the appartement on the Boulevard des Philosophes were closed to every one but myself. I believe I was of some use, if only in this, that I alone was aware of the incredible part of the situation. Miss Haldin nursed her mother alone to the last moment.
Some of them such as the illustrious Turgot believed that the best way of reaching the desired improvement was through the agency of a benevolent despotism; others such as Rousseau had in view an elaborate, a priori, ideal system of government; but these were exceptions, and the majority of the Philosophes ignored politics proper altogether. This was a great misfortune; but it was inevitable.
But under his breath he muttered, 'By heaven, I believe that the pretty fool really thinks that I am going to fight for her! To a man who had supped at White's the night before, and knew his age to be the âge des philosophes, it seemed the wildest fancy in the world. And his distaste grew.
He must have been very early drawn to the study of the French philosophes; much indeed of the doctrine which afterwards made him famous was either taken from, or incidentally anticipated by, Turgot and others of them, and it was a common remark, half in earnest half in gibe, that Bentham's views had made the tour of Europe in the French versions of Dumont before they attained to any attention in England.

And what of Sir George, hurled suddenly out of his age and world the age des philosophes, and the smooth world of White's and Lord March into this quagmire of feeling, this night of struggle upon the Wiltshire downs?
