I said a little while ago that parallelism was a perfected materialism. The reason of this will be understood. It is a doctrine which preserves the determinism of physical facts while avoiding the compromising of itself in the difficult explanation of the connection between the soul and the body. It remains scientific without raising a metaphysical heresy.
Sea water was our original habitat, since, like Venus, we have all come up out of the sea. The more intimate study of the composition of the blood has revealed the most astonishing parallelism between it and the compounds of sea water.
Distinction between the sterility of first crosses and of hybrids Sterility various in degree, not universal, affected by close interbreeding, removed by domestication Laws governing the sterility of hybrids Sterility not a special endowment, but incidental on other differences, not accumulated by natural selection Causes of the sterility of first crosses and of hybrids Parallelism between the effects of changed conditions of life and of crossing Dimorphism and trimorphism Fertility of varieties when crossed and of their mongrel offspring not universal Hybrids and mongrels compared independently of their fertility Summary.
But it is by no means again an ellipse, but is an entirely dependent figure without any formula or law of its own. Parallelism must make one of its lines the leading one, which is guided and directed by an actual causal connection within itself. The other line may then run parallel with this, but its course must certainly be determined by the other.
And this is to be noted, in order that no one may search in vain for the cause of the singular property of this ray in its parallelism to the edges mentioned. Finally, continuing my observations to discover the nature of this refraction, I learned that it obeyed the following remarkable rule.
Therefore, I need not dwell upon its parallelism with what has just been occupying our attention, but rather ask you simply to consider one point in reference to it, and that is that, side by side with the reference to the gift of Christ as being the measure of our possible attainments, the Apostle enlarges on the Infinite variety of the shapes which that one gift takes in different people.
We must note now that with this initial taint, public opinions are still further beset, because in a series of events seen mostly through stereotypes, we readily accept sequence or parallelism as equivalent to cause and effect. This is most likely to happen when two ideas that come together arouse the same feeling.
We will not decide which lot is the more enviable. But it seems a poet must choose. We have the high authority of Sancho for saying, "Para dar y tener Seso ha menester." He is a bright boy who can eat his cake and have it. In some incidents of the closing scenes of these memorable lives there is a curious parallelism.
Modern science has much insisted on this parallelism, and to a certain extent is allowed to have made it out. All these things, which conspire to prove that the ancient and the recent forms of life "are somehow intimately connected together in one grand system," equally conspire to suggest that the connection is one similar or analogous to generation.
And the parallelism between the two is exact up to a certain point. What difference a little point doth make; like the little fire, behold, how great a matter it kindleth! Indeed, lacking that one detail the older story would have had no value; it would not have been told; without its addition this would have been a repetition of the other.
