The heat of the rays seemed to burn them; there was a prickling pleasantness to it now, as they looked at the mighty sea of flame through smoked glasses. The vast arms of the corona reached out like the tentacles of some fiery octopus through thousands of miles of space huge arms of flaming gas that writhed out as though to reach and drag back the whirling planets to the parent body.
The monster wrapped his prize in three more tentacles, and then plunged his beak into it savagely. The next instant he was jerked to the surface of the water. A blaze of fierce sun blinded him, and strong meshes enclosed him, binding and entangling his tentacles. In such an appalling crisis most creatures of sea or land would have been utterly demoralized by terror. Not so the octopus.
The millions might sleep in peace the millions in whose cause we labored! but we who knew the reality of the danger knew that a veritable octopus had fastened upon England a yellow octopus whose head was that of Dr. Fu-Manchu, whose tentacles were dacoity, thuggee, modes of death, secret and swift, which in the darkness plucked men from life and left no clew behind. "Karamaneh!" I called softly.
The Sepia octopus was also in great repute, and Plautus, in his play of Cisina, introduces an old man who has just been purchasing some at the market. The love-potions alleged to have been administered were asserted to be chiefly composed of shell-fish, lobsters, sea hedge-hogs, spiced oysters, and cuttle-fish, the last of which was particularly famed for its stimulating qualities.
He had penetrated into the watery den of the Sepia Octopus, disturbed the conjugal happiness of that turtle-dove of the ocean, and come off victorious in a sanguinary conflict.
But ere he could execute this fatal project for the cuttle would have instantly swept him into the trailing weeds five revolver shots rang out in quick succession. Iris had reached the nearest rock. The third bullet gave the octopus cause to reflect. It squirted forth a torrent of dark-colored fluid. Instantly the water became black, opaque.
Then he saw what Zircon had seen, a glow in the water ahead and above them. Rick estimated quickly the distance they had traveled. There was no doubt of it. The frogmen were at the octopus cave! He followed Zircon's lead, cutting the light off and on as necessary, as the big scientist moved ahead.
Ned grasped more tightly his sharp, steel bar and spoke through the telephone to his companions. "Devil fish!" he said. "The devil fish are after us." To a large number of people the name devil fish brings to mind a conception of an octopus, squid, cuttle fish, or a member of that species. This is, however, a mistake.
But treacherous and murderous Thug of the Sea as he is, the octopus has one dreaded foe before whom he flees in terror, and compresses his body into the narrowest and most inaccessible cleft or endeavours to bury himself in the loose, soft sand and that foe is the orange-coloured or sage-green rock eel.
Such up-to-date, though in brief outline, is the history of the establishment of the Prussian octopus grip on military and naval matters in Turkey. We have largely ourselves to blame for it.
