The City Council of Nuremburg, one of the cities that was said to have been bombed by the French, later gave out a formal statement saying that no bombs had fallen on their city and no French aviators had been seen near it. But the German government gave out this "news" and promptly declared a "defensive" war, and the German people had to believe what they were told.

The emperor granted Dürer a pension; but it was never regularly paid, and after the emperor's death the Council of Nuremburg refused to pay it unless it was confirmed by the new sovereign, Charles V. For the purpose of obtaining this confirmation Dürer made a journey to the Netherlands in the year 1520. His wife and her maid Susanna went with him.

"Dere!" he cried, holding up a golden chaplet, or wreath for the head, of ruby flowers and leaves wrought in gold, a large pearl at the base of every leaf "dere! You shall not see a better sight in all de city ach! not in Nuremburg nor Coln. Dat is what you want it is schon, schon! and dirt sheap it is only von hundert marks. You take it?"

His assertion has been diligently and satisfactorily refuted by Don Christoval Cladera. The grand proof of M. Otto is a globe which Behem made during his residence in Nuremburg, in 1492, the very year that Columbus set out on his first voyage of discovery.

Since the days when the Counts of Nuremburg became electors of Brandenburg, from the grosse Kurfurst, Frederick the Great, to the present Emperor, the house of Hohenzollern has shown itself to be the most virile dynasty in modern history. Not always clever, they possessed the rare faculty of finding, developing and using men having the necessary ability to execute their current policies.

"Oh! gentlemen, what a capital phiz!" "Where where?" "There in the omnibus-box beneath Mdlle. de Cardoville's." "It's a Nuremburg nutcracker." "An ourang-outang!" "Did you ever see such round, staring eyes?" "And the nose!" "And the forehead!" "It's a caricature." "Order, order! the curtain rises." And, in fact, the curtain rose.

Father Scheiner's later observations plainly foreshadowed it; a conjecture to the same effect was emitted by Leonard Rost of Nuremburg early in the eighteenth century; both by Lahire in 1703 and by J. Cassini in 1719 spots had been seen as notches on the solar limb; while in 1770 Pastor Schülen of Essingen, from the careful study of phenomena similar to those noted by Wilson, concluded their depressed nature.

Houghton, Mifflin & Co., and writes me: "So far as I know, I am, at present, the only woman in America engaged in the practise of engraving as a fine art." PRESTEL, MARIA CATHARINA; FAMILY NAME HOLL. Born in Nuremburg, 1747. Her husband, Johan Prestel, was her teacher, and she was of great assistance in the work which he produced at Frankfort-on-the-Main, in 1783.

I remained four days in Nuremburg, during which I formed a friendly intimacy with the Polish ambassadors, and then resumed my journey in their company, being likewise accompanied by an ambassador belonging to the king of Bohemia, eldest son of the king of Poland.
