At a recent meeting in this city of the American Society of Civil Engineers, a paper by Edmund B. Weston was read, giving the description and result of experiments on the flow of water through a 2½ inch hose and through nozzles of various forms and sizes; also giving the results of experiments as to the height of jets of water.
"We won't have to pass the water so far then. As soon as it stops I'll unreel the hose and Cole will call for some fellows to jump up and work the handles. Don't have any disputes. The rest will pass buckets, and John Boll and Tom Donnell can handle the nozzles. I'll pass water, this time." The post of honor, of course, was at the nozzles, of which there were two.
The crowd had thickened, and a dull rumbling which had been audible for half a minute increased into a mighty roar as the fiery-red engine with its brass-helmeted heroes dashed round the corner, and pulled up with a crash, seeming to shoot the men off. These swarmed, for a few seconds, about the hose, water plug, and nozzles.
The gas rose in great clouds as if it had been poured from nozzles, expanding as it ascended; here and there brown clouds seemed to be mixed with the general yellowish green ones. "It looks like chlorine," I said, "and I bet it is." The Captain agreed that it probably was. The cannonade increased in intensity.
The plane was now an incomplete, twisted skeleton, licked through by flames. The crash wagon roared to a stop beside them. "Anybody hurt? Anybody left inside?" Joe shook his head, unable to speak for despairing rage. The fog wagon roared up, already spouting mist from its nozzles.
At the same time several lengths of leathern pump hose were laid along the deck, and fire-branches or nozzles attached to them. "Run out our stern-guns now," said the captain, with a grim smile, "and give it 'em hot. It won't do to seem to give in too easy. Run up the Union Jack. Don't take aim. I want more noise and smoke than mischief d'ye understand?"
I can see two cylinders directly under me. They’re manning the nozzles! Every man is masking at his post! Anybody on the stairs! Any sound?" "None." "Are you certain?" "It is as still as death below." "Try the dust. The wind’s changing, I think. Quick! Which way?" "West." "Oh, glory! Glory to God! They feel it below! They know. The wind has changed. Off came their respirators.
The Mechanical Valve-Gear The valves are located in the steam chests, which are bolted to the top of the casing directly over the first sets of expansion nozzles. The chests, two in number, are on opposite sides of the machine.
In the midst of it D suddenly draws my attention to a succession of great nozzles passing us, with their teams and limbers. I have stood beside the forging and tempering of their brothers in the gun-shops of the north, have watched the testing and callipering of their shining throats. They are 6-inch naval guns on their way to the line like everything else, part of the storm to come.
They were fitted with long nozzles, through which the air was driven by working the loose covering of the tops up and down by means of a small piece of wood attached to their centres. The blacksmith said that tin was obtained from a people in the north, called Marendi, and that he had made it into bracelets; we had never heard before of tin being found in the country.
