After giving this account of his person, Cardan writes down a catalogue of the various diseases which vexed him from time to time, a chapter of autobiography which looks like a transcript from a dictionary of Nosology. More interesting is the sketch which he makes of his mental state during these early years.

Nosology is a science doomed, thank God, to perish! Health alone will at last fill the earth. Or, if there should be always the ailing to help, a man will help them by being sound himself, not by knowing the ins and outs of disease. Diagnosis is not therapy.

Abundant evidence has been adduced of the gigantic evils which attend the abuse of tobacco. Let it be granted at once that there is such a thing as moderate smoking, and let it be admitted that we cannot accuse tobacco of being guilty of the whole of Cullen's 'Nosology'; it still remains that there is a long catalogue of frightful penalties attached to its abuse."

"Fool!" said the second. "Dolt!" said the third. "Ass!" said the fourth. "Ninny!" said the fifth. "Noodle!" said the sixth. "Be off!" said the seventh. At all this I felt mortified, and so called upon my father. "Father," I asked, "what is the chief end of my existence?" "My son," he replied, "it is still the study of Nosology; but in hitting the Elector upon the nose you have overshot your mark.

The most formidable endemic or contagious maladies in your nosology are not indigenous; and as far as regards health therefore, the ancient Britons, with no other remedies than their fields and woods afforded them, and no other medical practitioners than their deceitful priests, were in a better condition than their descendants, with all the instruction which is derived from Sydenham and Heberden, and Hunter, and with all the powers which chemistry has put into their hands.

Barber, an Englishman, and a somewhat noted teacher of elocution, having been converted to the phrenological faith, delivered certain magniloquent lectures on the same to the citizens of New Haven, and took pay therefor, after the manner of his sect. Percival responded with a sharp newspaper pasquinade, entitled "A Lecture on Nosology."

There was myself. I spoke of myself; of myself, of myself, of myself; of Nosology, of my pamphlet, and of myself. I turned up my nose, and I spoke of myself. "Marvellous clever man!" said the Prince. "Superb!" said his guests: and next morning her Grace of Bless-my-Soul paid me a visit. "Will you go to Almack's, pretty creature?" she said, tapping me under the chin. "Upon honor," said I.

By so doing, we may discover laws of the animal economy which have no place in our system of Nosology, or in our theories of physic.

It does not conceal itself behind scratches and periwigs, nor does it, like certain false teachers mentioned by St. Paul, go about from house to house, leading astray silly women......Finally, gentlemen, you may rest assured that Nosology will not gently submit to insult. Noli me tangere! Who ever endured a tweak of the nose? It will know how to take vengeance.

What intussusception, what potation, and, as a necessary consequence, alas! what rubification! But I have seen such noses. Beware of them! they are bad noses, very bad noses, I assure you.... Do not, I pray you, consider me irreverent, if I say that Nosology will prove highly favorable to the cause of religion.
