'What was the name the Queen said? asked Cyril suddenly. 'Nisbeth Nesbit something? You know, the slave of the great names? 'Wait a sec, said Robert, 'though I don't know why you want it. Nusroch Nisrock Nisroch that's it. Then Anthea pulled herself together. All her muscles tightened, and the muscles of her mind and soul, if you can call them that, tightened too.
Nisroch raised his great arm and pointed at the wall of the dungeon.
This figure has been called that of a god, and has been supposed to represent the Nisroch of Holy Scripture; but the only ground for such an identification is the conjectural derivation of Nisroch from a root nisr, which in some Semitic languages signifies a "hawk" or "falcon." Nisroch, which is utterly unlike any divine name hitherto found in the Assyrian records, is most probable a corruption.
It is not so with Chaldæa. Only a few have been identified beyond all doubt, those namely of which we have Hebrew or Greek transcriptions, preserving for us the real Chaldæan original; Ilou, Bel, Nisroch, Beltis, Istar, are examples of this.
The creature hesitated, then bowed low before them on the damp floor of the dungeon. 'Speak, it said, in a harsh, grating voice like large rusty keys being turned in locks. 'The servant of the Great Ones is YOUR servant. What is your need that you call on the name of Nisroch? 'We want to go home, said Robert. 'No, no, cried Anthea; 'we want to be where Jane is.
It was Nisroch. 'Nisroch! echoed the Queen. 'You are indeed magicians. Jane sat up, blinking stupidly. 'Hold It up, and say the word, cried Cyril, catching up the Psammead, which mechanically bit him, but only very slightly. 'Which is the East? asked Jane. 'Behind me, said the Queen. 'Why? 'Ur Hekau Setcheh, said Jane sleepily, and held up the charm.
And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead. In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death.
Under the very palace windows, from which Orestes found it expedient to retire for the time being, out upon the quays, and up the steps of the Caesareum, defiled that new portent; and in another half-hour a servant entered, breathlessly, to inform the shepherd of people that his victim was lying in state in the centre of the nave, a martyr duly canonised Ammonius now no more, but henceforth Thaumasius the wonderful, on whose heroic virtues and more heroic faithfulness unto the death, Cyril was already descanting from the pulpit, amid thunders of applause at every allusion to Sisera at the brook Kishon, Sennacherib in the house of Nisroch, and the rest of the princes of this world who come to nought.
This effigy, which probably typified by its mythic form the union of certain divine attributes, may perhaps be identified with the god Nisroch, in whose temple Sennacherib was slain by his sons after his return from his unsuccessful expedition against Jerusalem; the word Nisr signifying, in all Semitic languages, 'an eagle." The slabs arranged in the tenth compartment are interesting.
She took the book and hid it reverently among the bright folds of her gown. 'You shall teach me later to say the great names, she said. 'And the names of their Ministers perhaps the great Nisroch is one of them? 'I don't think so, said Cyril.
