Mr Toots, after a lengthened survey of the large books on the reading-desk, whispered Miss Nipper that he wondered where the banns were kept, but that young lady merely shook her head and frowned; repelling for the time all approaches of a temporal nature.
I see the hard look coming back into his face as the policeman, red and out of breath, twisted the nipper on his wrist, with a half-uncertain aside to me, "Them toughs there ain't no depending on, nohow." Sullen, defiant, planning vengeance, I see him led away to jail. Ruffian and thief! The police blotter said so. But, even so, the Kid had proved that my theories about toughs were not rot.
"Hello, boys, how's she working?" he inquired and there was something in the tone of his voice that disturbed the scouts. "Why, it's running in great shape. We have nearly half a bag full of moths now. What's the matter?" queried Nipper. "Well, I have some bad news for you. I'm sorry, fellows, but your little machine isn't as original as we thought it was.
For, under his eye at the same moment, accurately within his range of observation, coming full into the sphere of his startled and intensely wide-awake look-out, were Florence and Susan Nipper: Florence looking up into his face half timidly, and receiving the whole shock of his wooden ogling!
Mr Dombey, in a fury, put his hand out for the bell-rope; but there was no bell-rope on that side of the fire, and he could not rise and cross to the other without assistance. The quick eye of the Nipper detected his helplessness immediately, and now, as she afterwards observed, she felt she had got him.
Ye see, I had the nipper to go along with the edgin' tool in front of me, and 'twan't much trouble to get 'em up." He could not keep on for me regularly. The thought of Mr. S 's work waiting to be done fidgeted him. "When I was up there last he was talkin' about fresh gravellin' all his paths.
"That sounds a good sort o' name too," said Barney; "sort o' name you see in gowld letters on a chany mug in the shop winders, don't it? I don't fancy, though, I could bring my tongue to it, not as a jineral thing. I shall call yer `Nipper, if you don't mind. After a friend o' mine."
And he hadn't hardly set his eyes upon her before that, for months and months, and I don't think he would know her for his own child if he was to meet her in the streets to-morrow. Oh, there's a Tartar within a hundred miles of here, I can tell you, Mrs. Richards!" said Susan Nipper; "Wish you good morning, Mrs. Richards.
As the knight-errants of old relieved their minds by carving their mistress's names in deserts, and wildernesses, and other savage places where there was no probability of there ever being anybody to read them, so did Miss Susan Nipper curl her snub nose into drawers and wardrobes, put away winks of disparagement in cupboards, shed derisive squints into stone pitchers, and contradict and call names out in the passage.
The Chicken replying that his opinion always was, 'Go in and win, and further, 'When your man's before you and your work cut out, go in and do it, Mr Toots considered this a figurative way of supporting his own view of the case, and heroically resolved to kiss Miss Nipper next day.
