In the second post on the left I found it, a tiny knot-hole, which Chickadee had hollowed out deep and lined with rabbit fur. It was well hidden by the vines that almost covered the old post, and gray moss grew all about the entrance. A prettier nest I never found. I went back to my stump and sat down where I could just see the dark little hole that led to the nest.

They all laughed at the wild cries of the birds, except Anna Dorothea, who was touched by their distress, and when they were about to fell a tree which was half-dead, and on whose naked branches a black stork had built its nest, out of which the young ones were sticking their heads, she begged them with tears in her eyes to spare it. So the tree with the black stork's nest was allowed to stand.

Darius succeeded to the throne of Persia as a lion coming into the place of jackals, as an eagle into a nest of crows and carrion birds untiring, violent, relentless and brave. "Knowest thou one Phraortes, of Ecbatana?" the king asked suddenly when he was alone with Zoroaster. "I know him," answered the prince. "A man rich, and powerful, full of vanity as a peacock, and of wiles like a serpent.

But the young wrens said, "We will not eat yet, the bear must come to the nest, and beg for pardon and say that we are honorable children, before we will do that." Then the willow-wren flew to the bear's hole and cried, "Growler, thou art to come to the nest to my children, and beg their pardon, or else every rib of thy body shall be broken."

Sometimes these little birds lie in the bottom of the nest, quietly sleeping, while their father and mother are both away, getting them food. At other times they feel wide awake. Then they stretch their wings, stand upon their feet, and peep over the side of the nest.

'Ah! you are the pretty girl who was to come and save me! 'To save you! repeated Bellah. 'But who are you, my little friend? 'I am the husband of the Groac'h of the isle of Lok, and it is owing to her that I am here. 'But what are you doing in this nest? 'I am sitting on six eggs of stone, and I shall not be set free till they are hatched. On hearing this Bellah began to laugh.

Whenever, therefore, we see any creature able to go through any complicated and difficult process with little or no effort whether it be a bird building her nest, or a hen's egg making itself into a chicken, or an ovum turning itself into a baby we may conclude that the creature has done the same thing on a very great number of past occasions.

The summer and autumn they spent in Germany and Switzerland, and for the winter, as one would naturally expect, they went to Paris. In Paris, Varvara Pavlovna bloomed like a rose, and was able to make herself a little nest as quickly and cleverly as in Petersburg.

All through the sitting the work of the head of the family had been confined to encouraging his partner with an early morning song and his cheerful presence during the day, and to guarding the nest while she sought her food; but now that her most fatiguing labor was over, his began.

After a little the hen returned with her bill full of caterpillars, but she did not venture within 75 feet of the nest. I was not permitted to observe how long it would take the parental instinct to overcome the natural timidity of the birds. The sky suddenly became overcast, and a few minutes later I found myself enveloped in what the Scotch call a "wet mist."
