Reverent hands collected the remains and dug a grave; the funeral service was read by one of the officers, the ship's colours were hung half-mast high, and three volleys of musketry fired over the grave "the only tribute of respect," says Captain Morshead, "I could pay to this lofty-minded man and his devoted companions who have perished in the cause of the Gospel."

At the same time, the Dido, Captain William Morshead, had been commanded by the Admiralty to touch at the isles of Cape Horn and carry relief to the missionaries. On the 21st of October, in a lonely little bay called Spaniards' Harbour, in Picton Island, the Falkland Island vessel found the Speedwell on the beach, and near it an open grave. In the boat lay one body, near the grave another.

I will come with pleasure, said Doctor Unonius, thrusting Homer back in his shelf. 'Wunnerful brandy, Sir John! said old Squire Morshead. He said this regularly as he dined at Penalune when, after dinner and wine and songs, the hour came for the 'brandy-mixing' before the guests dispersed. Sir John was a widower and confined his hospitality to men.

Too late he reached Spaniards' Harbour, and having just time to visit the Speedwell in Cook's River, a gale springing up, he was compelled to put to sea without ever landing at Earnest Cove. In the meantime, Captain Morshead, in the Dido frigate, having sailed from England, was ordered to call at Picton Island with relief for the party.

Look at your Polpeor folk smugglers all, or the sons of smugglers a fine upstanding, independent lot as you would wish to see; whereas your poacher nine times out of ten is a sneak, and looks it. 'Because, retorted the doctor, but gently, 'your smuggler lives in his own cottage, serves no master, and has public opinion by which I mean the only public opinion he knows, that of his neighbours to back him; whereas your poacher lives by day in affected subservience to the landowner he robs by night, and because you take good care that public opinion is against him. 'To be sure I do, affirmed Mr Trelawny, and would have continued the argument, but here old Squire Morshead struck in and damned the Government for its new coastguard service.
