Any sudden light of happier expectation that might have animated him was extinguished by the flight of chatter following the cry which had sounded like Beauchamp. He went out into the rain, thinking that Beauchamp would be missed. The fellow had bothered the world, but the world without him would be heavy matter. The hour was mid-day, workmen's meal-time.

He would come strolling over, always alone, a little before a meal-time, take a chair, and talk and eat with us like an old family friend. Gilbertine etiquette appears defective on the point of leave-taking.

He had prospered at high wages in his trade at that oil town, and his wife and children had managed a hired farm so well as to pay all the family expenses from it, but he was gladly leaving opportunity behind, that he might return to a land where, if you were passing a house at meal-time, they came out and made you come in and eat.

Her own tact and judgment will enable her to judge how much assistance she should offer, if any, to the friends she visits a matter which must always be determined by circumstances.

"What can anybody be thinking of to call just at meal-time?" He trod the hall, flung open the street door. Mrs. Deacon listened. Lulu, coming in with the toast, was warned to silence by an uplifted finger.

He went in before the King, and spake thus: 'Fleeting hour is short, sire, but meal-time long. Said the King: 'Skald, what news? Hard task, but 'tis thine honour, King, I seek, who here war tidings bring. Arm swiftly, every one!
