Once a question became political, if one did not agree with Macrossan, he made an enemy. This was due to the strong, independent stand Macrossan took on a political matter which gave McIlwraith offence.
I must say that after taking this course, my opponents made but little allusion to the way in which I had been elected, and then only in a joking, friendly manner. The Opposition looked on with some interest, anticipating a Government defeat. The bill passed its second reading by the casting vote of the Speaker. I voted with the Government. McIlwraith promptly tendered his resignation, but was induced by Sir Henry Norman, the then Governor, to reconsider this.
