Having great pity, our Eternal Father lighteneth the dark night of ignorance, manifesting Himself in that Land of Joy as the Buddha of Infinite Light which enlighteneth all the worlds with its immeasurable glory.
The Gospel cometh of God, it showeth Christ, and requireth Faith. The Gospel is a light in the world, which lighteneth mankind, and maketh children of God. False Preachers are worse than deflowerers of virgins. Righteousness is obtained through faith, and not through works. Works make faith strong. A Preacher is made good through temptations. A Prince is venison in heaven.
Peradventures, guesses, dreams, precious fragments of truth, twisted in with the worst of lies, noble aspirations side by side with bestial representations these are the things on which our brethren repose, or try to repose. We do not forget that light which lighteneth every man that cometh into the world.
And he said unto the disciples, The days will come, when ye shall desire to see one of the days of the Son of man, and ye shall not see it. And they shall say to you, See here; or, see there: go not after them, nor follow them. For as the lightning, that lighteneth out of the one part under heaven, shineth unto the other part under heaven; so shall also the Son of man be in his day.
Again, thou sayest I said, "That as he is God, Christ lighteneth every man that comes into the world; "which thing again I say. What then? Therefore sayest thou, "The light is the law." Give me leave here to take thy words in twain: First, if when thou sayest, then the law is light, thou mean, the light of the law is the light of the law, and no more, thou sayest right.
It may be for an instant only. It may be merely a thought, a gleam, a flash; and yet, like that quick flash of lightning, of which our Lord speaks, that lighteneth out of the one part of heaven, and shineth unto the other part, that cometh out of the East and shineth even unto the West, like that swift momentary flash which runs round the whole horizon in the twinkling of an eye, this swift thought and gleam of God's purity fills the whole guilty soul full of light.
He that turneth from the road to rescue another, Turneth toward his goal: He shall arrive in due time by the foot-path of mercy, God will be his guide. He that taketh up the burden of the fainting, Lighteneth his own load: The Almighty will put his arms underneath him, He shall lean upon the Lord.
In the latter, it can be no more than a feeling after Him who is the 'light that lighteneth every man that cometh into the world. Surely there are souls amid the darkness of heathenism yearning toward the light, like plants grown in the dark.
"We need no sun," he whispered, smiling piteously; "no sun or light of a candle. We have our light on earth the light that lighteneth every man...." The Campanile seemed further away than ever now, in that ghostly glimmer of dawn more and more helpless every moment, compared with the beautiful vivid shining of the streets.
But a new light was now discovered that which lighteneth every man that cometh into the world; and which, it was alleged, would alone, if cherished and followed, lead the honest inquirer into all truth. National religion, so called, had been propagated at an incredible expense of treasure, and by the sacrifice of the best blood in the country, to the shrine of infallibility called uniformity.
