That the released libido appears thus may have several reasons. External ones, like the life-imparting properties of the sun, invite comparison. On this topic see my essay, Phant. u. Myth. Here the occasion may be offered to the mystic to utilize for conscious life and action, functions that hitherto had been unconscious.
On account of this strong libido possession the memory of the light was kept alive in the unconscious and it needed only that the light of the lamp or the candle should fall upon the face of the wanderer to permit her to experience in the most profound sleep the same pleasure, the unconscious was set into activity and everything was accomplished most manifestly according to the purpose that served her strong libido.
These trends are the raw, native, uninhibited desires of man; they are our lusts, our crude unsocialized desires, arising out of a metaphysical, undifferentiated yearning called libido. The Freudians would protest against this. Libido is the life energy, but all the Freudian analyses of actual cases published make libido sex, and usually "perverse."
The hammering in the arteries, the roaring in the ears, the restless, disturbed nights, as well as the unusually disturbed days, we know these all as manifestations of an unsatisfied libido. The first "frightful" anxiety dream seems to lead deeper, as well, as the "horrible suffering" started by a hand, which he felt upon his body.
It would, of course, be most natural for the child to select as the sexual object that person whom it has loved since childhood with, so to speak, a suppressed libido.
The chemical mechanism of the instincts described: sex libido, passion and jealousy in relation to the ovaries and testes, fear and anger in relation to the adrenals, sympathy and curiosity in relation to the pituitaries, suggests that a similar explanation will hold for the dynamics of the other instincts.
Neurotic fear has its origin in sexual life and corresponds to a libido which has been turned away from its object and has not succeeded in being applied. All so- called day dreams of women are erotic; of men they are either ambition or love. "Often dreams, apparently harmless, turn out to be sinister if we take pains to interpret them. All have the mark of the beast.
The etymology of the word liberty, at least as I understand it, will serve still better to explain my thought. When spontaneity takes a useful, generous, or beneficent direction, it is called libertas; when, on the contrary, it takes a harmful, vicious, base, or evil direction, it is called libido.
From psychoanalysis we look over the boundary which we are not permitted to pass into the activity of the narcissistic libido and thus form an idea of the relations between the two.
It can often be recognized that the masochism is nothing but a continuation of the sadism turning against one's own person in which the latter at first takes the place of the sexual object. The pain which is here overcome ranks with the loathing and shame which were the resistances opposed to the libido.
