Every body knows Mud Sam, the old negro fisherman who has fished about the Sound for the last twenty or thirty years. Well, it is now many years since that Sam, who was then a young fellow, and worked on the farm of Killian Suydam on Long Island, having finished his work early, was fishing, one still summer evening, just about the neighborhood of Hell Gate.

Killian Van Rensellaer was a nine day's wonder in New Amsterdam, for he carried a high head, looked down upon the portly, short-legged burgomasters, and owned no allegiance to the governor himself; boasting that he held his patroonship directly from the Lords States General. He tarried but a short time in New Amsterdam merely to beat up recruits for his colony.

It was, indeed, a smiling, dilettante sort of envy; but yet there it was: the passion of Ahab for the vineyard, done in little; and he was relieved when Mr. Killian appeared upon the scene. "I hope, sir, that you have slept well under my plain roof," said the old farmer. "I am admiring this sweet spot that you are privileged to dwell in," replied Otto, evading the inquiry.

And I believe he might be tempted by a permanency." "The young man has unsettled views," returned Otto. "Possibly the purchaser " began Killian. A little spot of anger burned in Otto's cheek. "I am the purchaser," he said. "It was what I might have guessed," replied the farmer, bowing with an aged, obsequious dignity.

Killian said to his partner: 'There is something the matter with the puppets to-day; they want careful handling. I am glad we settled that you are to do the new play; for, before the queen and her great ladies, I am likely to lose my head. All the court was gathered together to watch the puppet-play, while behind the scenes the partner took all the leading strings into his own hands.

In the meantime the fierce feud between William the Testy and Killian Van Rensellaer, which at first had menaced deadly warfare, gradually cooled off, like many other war questions, in the prolonged delays of diplomacy.

While the governor doubted and did nothing, the lordly Killian went on to complete his sturdy little castellum of Rensellaersteen, and to garrison it with a number of his tenants from the Helderberg, a mountain region famous for the hardest heads and hardest fists in the province.

Colman, Bishop of Dromore; St. Moling, Bishop of Ferns; St. Colman Ela, Abbot; St. Cummian, "the White;" St. Fintan, Abbot; St. Gall, Apostle of Switzerland; St. Fridolin, "the Traveller;" St. Columbanus, Apostle of Burgundy and Lombardy; St. Killian, Apostle of Franconia; St. Columbkill, Apostle of the Picts; St. Cormac, called "the Navigator;" St. Cuthbert; and St. Aidan, Apostle of Northumbria.

I think it was the Prince that conquered." "And, sir, you would be right," replied Killian seriously. "In the eyes of God, I do not question but you would be right; but men, sir, look at these things differently, and they laugh." "They made a song of it," observed Fritz. "How does it go? Ta-tum-ta-ra...."

'You have perhaps ridden far, sir? he inquired. 'I have, as you say, ridden far, replied Otto; 'and, as you have seen, I was prepared to do justice to your daughters cookery. 'Possibly, sir, from the direction of Brandenau? continued Killian.
