South of it, down to the time of this ode, were many rude and wild tribes that gave frequent occupation to the kings of Kau. Their war chariots are very large! Their footmen and charioteers never weary!
"We must be able to govern the family before we can rule a state." What means this? If a man fails to teach the members of his own family to be obedient and loyal to their head, how can he train a nation to be united, obedient, and loyal? Yas and Shun ruled with love, and the people became loving. Kieh and Kau ruled with violence, and the people became violent.
This was appropriate to a sacrifice in spring, offered to God to seek His blessing on the agricultural labours of the year, Hau Ki, as the ancestor of the House of Kau, being associated with Him in it.
THE Shu and previous portions of the Shih have made us familiar with Shao, the name of the appanage of Shih, one of the principal ministers at the court of Kau in the first two reigns of the dynasty. The site of the city of Shao was in the present department of Fang-khiang, Shen-hsi.
It wounded a young man, who had flung himself in front of his liege, and in the confusion of the moment Kamiole escaped, running like a deer through a shower of stones and darts, gaining his boat and sailing away for his native state of Kau. Blown with pride in his exploit, the rebel set about the raising of an army to drive the new people from the island.
This same creature had lured many a poor fisherman to death on the rocky coast of Kau, and Maui thought it high time to put an end to such a pest, so he killed her. Once more he took up his search for his beloved kite and soon found it cleverly hidden in the hills. Ironically he named the spot Puuanuhe, and returning home with his precious toy he fastened it securely to its moorings again.

The priest added, 'These are proper places for the King's residence; but he must not remain in Kona, for it is polluted. This was agreed to. It was now break of day.
We got back to the schooner in good time, and then sailed down to Kau, where we disembarked and took final leave of the vessel. We made nearly a two days' journey of it, but that was on account of laziness.
The first possessor of it, along with the still more famous duke of Kau, remained at court, to watch over the fortunes of the new dynasty. They were known as 'the highest dukes' and 'the two great chiefs, the duke of Kau having charge of the eastern portions of the kingdom, and the other of the western.
He sacrificed regularly in the ancestral temple, and after death his successors sacrificed to him. The Duke of Kau continued the glorious traditions handed on by Wu. Both these great rulers realised the aspirations and wishes of their forefathers, restoring and improving the ancestral temple, renovating the sacred vessels and offering sacrifices suited to each year.
