I could spin many a tale of tyranny in high places, and almost as many, no doubt, of the pettinesses of workingmen. But what is the good? Why stir up my bile? In progressive incarnations, I have now passed through those of baker and petty tradesman. I am no longer an employer who exploits the workingman, nor can I see that I ever did so.
But the bill of its past acquitted, it may be that then it shall be free to pursue on trillions of spheres the diversified course of endless life free to pass from world to world, from beatitude to bliss, from transformation to transfiguration, from the transitory to the eternal; weaving, meanwhile, a garland of migrations that stretch from sky to sky, marrying its memoirs with those of the universe, and, finally, from some ultimate zenith, reviewing, as it casts them aside, the masks of concluded incarnations.
The subjects of the epic poems of the Hindus are derived chiefly from their religious tenets, and relate to the incarnations of the gods, who, in their human forms, become the heroes of this poetry.
"It is where a disciple speaks of Jesus as the only begotten. Son." The Wanderer smiled. "The young man is too literal. He forgets that the Only Begotten Son may have had many Incarnations." "The Princess Irene was also present," Lael went on. "Sergius said she too could accept your argument did you alter it" "Alter it!"
I expect you'll think me sentimental, a first-class squash out of the pumpkin-garden; but it's in the desert, and it gets into you and saturates you, till you feel that this is a kind of middle space between the world of cities, and factories, and railways, and tenement-houses, and the quiet world to come a place where they think out things for the benefit of future generations, and convey them through incarnations, or through the desert.
In Easter Island a form of the house-god is the lizard; it is also a tutelary deity in Madagascar. Mantis. Cagn is a prominent figure in Bushman mythology; the mantis and the caterpillar, Ngo, are his incarnations. It was called the "Hottentots' god" by early settlers. Monkey. In India the monkey-god, Hanuman, is a prominent figure; in orthodox villages monkeys are safe from harm.
Now primitive peoples, as we have seen, sometimes believe that their safety and even that of the world is bound up with the life of one of these god-men or human incarnations of the divinity. Naturally, therefore, they take the utmost care of his life, out of a regard for their own. But no amount of care and precaution will prevent the man-god from growing old and feeble and at last dying.
Our informant told us that he had personal knowledge of a number of similar cases, none of which, however, were quite as complete in detail as the one mentioned. He also informed us that he himself, and a number of his acquaintances who had attained certain degrees of occult unfoldment, were fully aware of their past lives for several incarnations back.
He kissed her hair. "Are you crying, Cara, dear?" he asked softly. Her head came up. "I never cry," she answered. "Do you believe there are more lives other incarnations that I may yet live to be a butterfly or a vagrant bee?" "I believe" his voice was firm "I believe you are not Queen of Galavia yet by a good bit.
But the truth is that it is a very transient and perishable and worthless thing compared to the new powers that were unconsciously evolved in getting it powers that will be retained by the man and be brought into use in future incarnations. Desire, then, plays a most important role in human evolution. It awakens, stimulates, propels.
