To Galileo science is indebted for the discovery of the laws of weight, the scientific construction of the system of Copernicus, the pendulum, the improvement of many scientific instruments, the invention of the hydrostatic balance, the thermometer, proportional compasses, and, above all, the telescope.
We might believe that to distend the bladder by hydrostatic pressure was a cure for incontinence of urine, and that it acted by removing the local cause, the smallness and contraction of the bladder, were it not that the loss of control is so apt to spread to the rectum as well. There is no evidence that the urine is peculiarly irritating.
Bramah's first invention with this object was his Hydrostatic Machine, founded on the doctrine of the equilibrium of pressure in fluids, as exhibited in the well known 'hydrostatic paradox. In his patent of 1785, in which he no longer describes himself as Cabinet maker, but 'Engine maker' of Piccadilly, he indicated many inventions, though none of them came into practical use, such as a Hydrostatical Machine and Boiler, and the application of the power produced by them to the drawing of carriages, and the propelling of ships by a paddle-wheel fixed in the stern of the vessel, of which drawings are annexed to the specification; but it was not until 1795 that he patented his Hydrostatic or Hydraulic Press.
With a powerful grasp on mathematical truths and principles, he entered with whole-hearted zest into inviting problems, or into practical details of mechanical or hydrostatic or astronomical science.
Osmotic pressure will then appear to be due to the shock of the dissolved molecules against the membrane. It will come from one side of this partition to superpose itself on the hydrostatic pressure, which latter must have the same value on both sides. The analogy with a perfect gas naturally becomes much greater as the solution becomes more diluted.
My next was to visit the pantry, the cellar, and the larder, but they were all void of food and drink. My wife must have been there first. As I had drunk nothing since I burgled the Kennington chemist's, I was very thirsty, though my mind was still hydrostatic. I cannot account for it on scientific principles, but I felt very angry with my wife.
He gave its size, height, weight, and told how to reach it. He gave lectures on the Hydrostatic Balance and the Centers of Gravity, and then published them as serials. The Florentines crowned him with bay and enthusiastically proclaimed him, "The Modern Archimedes." Pisa now put forth efforts to have her gifted son come home. There was always rivalry between Pisa and Florence.
At high flood, the hydrostatic pressure on the banks, combined with capillary attribution, sends water to great horizontal distances through the loose soil; at low water the current is reversed, and the moisture received from the river is partly returned, and may often be seen oozing from the banks into the river. Clot Bey, Apercu sur l'Egypte, i., 128.
There is in natural philosophy what is called the hydrostatic paradox, which consists in the fact that a small quantity of any liquid as, for example, the coffee in the nose of the coffee-pot will balance and sustain a very much larger quantity as that contained in the body of it so as to keep the surface of each at the same level.
To the thoughtful person it is the method of the man which constitutes his real greatness, that power of insight by which he solved the two great problems of the nature of the lever and of hydrostatic pressure, which form the basis of all static and hydrostatic science to this day.
