The prairies themselves are distinguished by specific names, according to what covers their surface. We have seen that there are "timber prairies" and "flower-prairies." The latter are usually denominated "weed prairies" by the rude hunters who roam over them. The vast green meadows covered with "buffalo" grass, or "gramma," or "mezquite" grass, are termed "grass prairies."

Grandma joked, in her tart way, "I never looked to be touring the country in my own auto!" Rose-Ellen jiggled in the back seat. "Peekaneeka, Gramma!" she said. When it rained, the children scurried to fasten the side curtains and then huddled together to keep warm while they played tick-tack-toe or guessing games. For meals they stopped where they could milk Carrie and build a small fire.

The openings between were covered with a sward of short gramma grass, and the whole landscape presented the appearance of a cultivated park; so that one involuntarily looked along the undulating outlines of the hills for some noble mansion or lordly castle.

"The slaves get a whippin if they run away." "After Yankees come, my ole mother come home and all chillun together. I live with gramma and go home after work each day. Hired out doin maid work. All dis after Yankees come dat I live with gramma." "Someone yell, 'Yankees are comin', and de mistress tell me, she say 'You mus learn to be good and hones'. I tole her, 'I am now'."

In an agricultural country it is expected that rain or snow will fall during every month of the year, but on the range rain is expected only in certain months and, if it fails to fall then, it means failure, in a measure, for the entire year. Rain is very uncertain in Arizona. July and August are the rain months during which time the gramma grass grows.

Altogether, Elsmere found traveling very much to his taste. The noon express stopped for a minute, he was thrust aboard the last car, and a few minutes later, according to instructions, the newsboy put him off at Edgewater, with a cheery: "Here y'are, Bub, and there's Ma and Gramma." Elsmere had taken a fancy to the newsboy and did not at all wish to stop at Edgewater.

"I'm ready to grow old when my time comes, an' if I get there by the road some have took before me, I guess I sha'n't be put under the sod by any vote o' town-meetin'. As I look back, seems to me 'most all them that's gone before us has had their uses to the last. Think o' gramma Jakes!

That beauty shone resplendent now in the beautiful face of Mary Marchland's daughter. The world can change wonderfully in sixty minutes. As we rode out toward the Rio Grande, the yellow sands, the gray gramma grass, the purple sage, the tall green cliffs, and, high above, the gleaming snow-crowned peaks, took on a beauty never worn for me before.

After so long and terrible a journey, of course, we all stood in need of rest and refreshment. We made up our minds to stay by the stream all night, and perhaps for a day or two. The fringe of willows extended on both sides of it for a distance of fifty yards into the plain; and among these, growing under their shade, there were patches of grass that species known in Mexico as the gramma grass.

From the plain above the cliffs were not visible, and even the great abyss of the valley itself could not be seen a hundred paces back from the edge of the bluff. There was no escarpment or slope of any kind. The turf ran in to the very edge of the precipice, and on the same level with the rest of the plain. It was smooth and firm covered with a short sward of gramma grass.
