As I had early taken a great interest in the geography of New South Wales, the Governor was pleased to appoint me to the command of this expedition. In the month of September, 1828, I received his Excellency's commands to prepare for my journey; and by the commencement of November, had organized my party, and completed the necessary arrangements.
"Yes; I didn't think of that. We will help you with the rope." The boat was very heavy, now that it was full of water. Inch by inch it was pulled up, until the water was all out except near the stern. Dan and Vincent then turned it bottom upward, and it was soon hauled up among the bushes. "Now, Miss Kingston, which do you think is our best course? I know nothing whatever of the geography here."
I hope to live to find three conditions established at the Colonial Office: That no one, from the head down to the office boy, shall enter the doors without having passed in general and in British Empire, geography.
These narratives and descriptions may be made excellent practice in either oral or written English and will be of the sort Dewey characterizes as "having something to say rather than having to say something." Geography. This study may also enter as deeply into the field of geography as the development of the class warrants. It will be geography of a vital sort.
They look like railway-embankments crossing the low ground, and serve as dykes when there is a flood, a casualty which still often happens. This change is interesting to the student of physical geography; and Humboldt's account of the causes which have brought it about is full and explicit.
Geography is a most enlightening science. In describing the habitat of man it largely explains his history. Animal battles give the right and only key to human conflicts, for the superadded rational element in man is not partisan, but on the contrary insinuates into his economy the novel principle of justice and peace.
When night comes, we shut our eyes like the chickens, waiting for the light that means money-making or pleasure of the senses; or we go to theatres or to balls, or elsewhere, to shut out as far as possible all knowledge of that marvellous, unlimited creation to which we belong, and which it is our greatest privilege feebly to study. The geography class of the future will be a class in astronomy.
For some reason that I could never discover, the dominie had all his life refused to teach his scholars geography. The inspector and many others asked him why there was no geography class, and his invariable answer was to point to his pupils collectively, and reply in an impressive whisper: "They winna hae her." This story, too, seems to reflect against the dominie's views on cleanliness.

The branches of Education most desirable for the preparation of youth, for practical useful every-day life, are Arithmetic and good Penmanship, in order to be Accountants; and a good rudimental knowledge of Geography which has ever been neglected, and under estimated and of Political Economy; which without the knowledge of the first, no people can ever become adventurous nor of the second, never will be an enterprising people.
