The party turned in, and in a short time all of them, tired out by the fatigues of the day, were fast asleep. Mr. Fluxion, before half past eleven, had reported all the students in the house. At six o'clock in the morning all hands were turned out, and several squads of them were exploring the city on their own account. But it was not till after breakfast that a systematic excursion was organized.
Fluxion, if the wind continued to increase, to have the sail reduced, though neither the safety of the ship nor of the spars absolutely required such a step. The quarter watch on deck was sufficient to perform this labor. "Lay aloft, foretopmen!" said the second lieutenant; and those of the watch who had their stations in the fore rigging sprang up the shrouds.
Mr. Fluxion came on deck with a pair of handcuffs. It was the first time they had been seen, and no student even knew there were any on board. The discipline of the ship had been as gentle as it was firm, and this was the first time such instruments were necessary. "Mr. Peaks, put the irons on him!" said Mr. Lowington, his usual dignity unruffled by angry emotions.
The day wore wearily away, crowded with doubt, anxiety, and perplexity to the runaways. At three in the afternoon, when the starboard watch were on deck, Peaks, by order of Mr. Fluxion, stationed a lookout in the fore-top. Perth and Herman were the first to do this duty. "I suppose our game is all up," said the latter, as they seated themselves in the top.
He was on the best of terms with Mr. Fluxion, and he was happier than he had been before since the Josephine sailed from Hull. Leaving him to the enjoyment of the new order of things, we will follow Mr. Hamblin on board of the ship. The barge ran up alongside, and the professor's trunk was hoisted on board.
"Won't you tell us, Mr. Briskett?" interposed Herman. "Tell you what?" "Where the vessel is going." "Going to sea," answered the head steward, good-naturedly; for he rather enjoyed the perplexity of the crew. "Is there any secret about the ship's destination?" "You must ask Mr. Fluxion.
They visited the fortress erected by Napoleon with the intention of making The Helder the Gibraltar of the North. On Thursday morning the tourists took the steamer, through the Great Canal, to Amsterdam. Being obliged to wait an hour for the train to Utrecht, Paul visited one of the "diamond mills" of the city with Mr. Fluxion.
Fluxion stood at the door, and checked off the names of the party as they entered, on the list he held, so as to be sure that all had come in. It was not an easy thing for Lynch to ascend three flights of stairs; but his companions supported him, and contrived to screen him from the officers, till they reached the room where they were to sleep.
Fluxion to the quarter-master at the wheel, when the headland bore north-east from the vessel. "South-east!" exclaimed Perth, when the order had been repeated. "That means the Straits of Gibraltar. Fellows, we are bound up the Mediterranean." "What does it mean?" inquired Herman. "Fluxion is going to Italy," replied the leader, bitterly. "He is taking us with him!"
She soon reached Dort, or Dordrecht, where she made a landing, and the students wandered for an hour through the streets of this ancient town. "This is a musty old place," said Paul, as he walked up one of the streets with a canal in the middle of it, in company with Mr. Fluxion and the surgeon; "I shouldn't feel safe here unless I lived in a boat."
