I shall reach Philadelphia on Monday night, New York on Tuesday night, and New Haven on Wednesday night. Oh! is it possible, is it possible? Shall I never see my dear wife again? But I cannot trust myself to write on this subject. I need your prayers and those of Christian friends to God for support. I fear I shall sink under it. Oh! take good care of her dear children. Your agonized son, FINLEY.

Finley, the post surgeon, was also absent, and his place was supplied by Dr. Harmon, a gentleman from Vermont. My husband's mother, two sisters, and brother resided at the Agency House the family residence near the lake being occupied by J.N. Bailey, the postmaster. In the Dean House lived a Mr. and Mrs. Forbes, who kept a school.

I shall say, too, that you broke all those dishes, and if you contradict it, I'll take that locket to a police-man, and tell him you stole it. Won't you look pretty going to jail with your long black curls? Answer me that, Miss Hetty Letty?" Letty only answered by her sobs. "What's all this?" said Mrs. Finley, opening the door; "one might as well try to sleep in Bedlam.

Shepherd, Finley and myself were dispatched to Berkeley to recruit and refill the old Company, which we performed in about five weeks. Col'o Stephenson also returned to Virginia to facilitate the raising the additional Companies. While actively employed in August, 1776, he was taken sick, and in four days died.

As these two hardy adventurers, John Finley and Daniel Boone, sat together hour after hour by the fire, talking of the new country which Finley had explored, the hearts of both burned within them again to penetrate those remote realms. To them there were no hardships in the journey.

I got them because they were cheap, and have exchanged them for a handsome English edition of 'Gil Blas'; price, $4.50." In the fall of 1807 Finley Morse returned to college accompanied by his next younger brother, Sidney Edwards. In a letter of March 6, 1808, he says: "Edwards and myself are very well and I believe we are doing well, but you will learn more of that from our instructors."

It was on the first of May, in the year 1769, that I resigned my domestic happiness for a time, and left my family and peaceable habitation on the Yadkin River, in North-Carolina, to wander through the wilderness of America, in quest of the country of Kentucke, in company with John Finley, John Stewart, Joseph Holden, James Monay, and William Cool.

We proceeded successfully, and after a long and fatiguing journey through a mountainous wilderness, in a westward direction, on the 7th day of June following we found ourselves on Red river, where John Finley had formerly been trading with the Indians, and, from the top of an eminence, saw with pleasure the beautiful level of Kentucky.

His brother, Sidney Edwards, in a letter to his parents of December 9, 1823, says: "Finley is in good spirits again; not because he has any prospect of business here, but he is dreaming of the gold mines of Mexico." As his secret was now out, he explains it fully in the following letter to his wife, dated December 21, 1823:

McQuillen or Ella Finley might be seen running bareheaded across the street for Miss Grower. Physical force was needed, as the rector discovered on one occasion; physical force, and something more, a dauntlessness that kept Sally Grower in the room after the other women had fled in terror. Then remorse, despondency, another fear.... As the weeks went by, the relapses certainly became fewer.
