In South India, the Mohammedan is described by a vernacular expression which is as uncomplimentary as it is filthy, and which is intended to classify them among the lowest in their habits. When cholera and similar epidemics prevail in the regions with which I am familiar, the Mohammedan, with the Pariah, on account of unclean habits, becomes the first victim of its ravages.
But in reality the only conclusion from his demonstration is that many unhealthy and criminal characters adopt Anarchism, a conclusion which he himself admits in this remark, that "Criminals take part specially in the beginnings of insurrections and revolutions in large numbers, for, at a time when the weak and undecided are still hesitating, the impulsive activity of abnormal and unhealthy characters preponderates, and their example then produces epidemics of excesses."

I wonder how long he would have gone on if it had not laid hold on him. 'You don't mean that he has it? 'I do. It will give him a practical lesson in simple epidemics. 'And Henry Ward has it! repeated Mary, looking so much dismayed that her father laughed, saying
Bacteriological study has shown that the source of cholera infection in cases of raging epidemics is, in large part at least, our drinking water; and since this has been known, although cholera has twice invaded Europe, and has been widely distributed, it has not obtained any strong foothold or given rise to any serious epidemic except in a few cases where its ravages can be traced to recognised carelessness.

Ergotism from eating bread made with ergotized wheat is now rare, but pellagra from the consumption of mouldy maize, and lathyrism, due to the admixture with flour of the seeds of certain kinds of vetch, are still common in Southern Europe. Symptoms.
BELOVED MARY, I received your long expected letter during a visit from the Hillards. I feared you were ill, but not that you had forgotten me; for I have an imperturbable faith in the love of my friends which appearances cannot affect. Each of the great epidemics of it 1830-33, 1836-37, 1847-48, and, of most vivid and unblessed memory, 1889-90 can be traced in its stately march completely across the civilized world, beginning, as do nearly all our world-epidemics, cholera, plague, influenza, etc., in China, and spreading, via India or Turkestan, to Russia, Berlin, London, New York, Chicago.
He acted upon this advice, and before long had the satisfaction of seeing the several epidemics lose their virulence, and, before many weeks, disappear entirely. On the 16th we made a very long march.
