Daniell has observed, in his meteorological essays, that a cloud sometimes appears fixed on a mountain summit, while the wind continues to blow over it. The same phenomenon here presented a slightly different appearance. In this case the cloud was clearly seen to curl over, and rapidly pass by the summit, and yet was neither diminished nor increased in size.
"The negroes have a growing self-respect and regard for character. This was a feeling which was scarcely known by them during slavery." Mr. J. Howell. "The negroes pay a great deal more attention to their personal appearance, than they were accustomed to while slaves. The women in particular have improved astonishingly in their dress and manners." Dr. Daniell.
The hydrogen diminishes the value of the copper, the current grows weaker, and the cell is said to "polarise." It follows that a simple water cell is not a good arrangement for the supply of a steady current. The Daniell cell is one of the best, and gives a very constant current.
"Here, fifty winters since, by Yarra's stream, A scattered hamlet found its modest place: What mind would venture then in wildest dream Its wondrous growth and eminence to trace? What seer predict a stripling in the race Would, swift as Atalanta, win the prize Of progress, 'neath the world's astonished eyes?" J. F. DANIELL, "The Jubilee of Melbourne."
The extent of surface is not so important in the case of the copper plate, which is not acted on, and in this case is merely a spiral of wire, helping to keep the solutions apart and the crystals down. The Daniell cell is much employed in telegraphy. The Bunsen cell consists of a zinc plate in sulphuric acid, and at carbon plate in nitric acid, with a porous separator between the liquids.
In 1841 a difference arose between Cooke and Wheatstone as to the share of each in the honour of inventing the telegraph. The question was submitted to the arbitration of the famous engineer, Marc Isambard Brunel, on behalf of Cooke, and Professor Daniell, of King's College, the inventor of the Daniell battery, on the part of Wheatstone.
And finally, Daniell says: "A vibrating body, before it can act as a sounding body, must produce alternate compressions and rarefactions in the air, and these must be well marked.
I could not see any thing which was to instigate negroes to rebellion, after they had obtained their liberty. I have not heard of a single case of even meditated revenge." Dr. Daniell, Proprietor, Member of Council, Attorney of six estates, and Manager of Weatherill's. "One of the blessings of emancipation has been, that it has banished the fear of insurrections, incendiarism, &c." Mr.
I have lately been obliged to discharge a manager from one of the estates under my direction, on account of his overbearing disposition. If I had not dismissed him, the people would have abandoned the estate en masse." Dr. Daniell. "The management of an estate under the free system is a much lighter business than it used to be.
In the graveyard is the epitaph of George Daniell, the founder of Madron schools in days when men built schools instead of quarrelling about them: "Belgia me birth, Britaine me breeding gave; Cornwall a wife, ten children, and a grave." It seems to have been in this district that the last bull-baiting took place in Cornwall.
