The committee appointed to confer with the British government was composed of Macdonald, Brown, Cartier and Galt. They met in England a committee of the imperial cabinet, Gladstone, Cardwell, the Duke of Somerset and Earl de Grey and Ripon. An agreement was arrived at as to defence.
There is Evelyn Cardwell; she came out when I did; and there comes Sandon Craig with a very old lady there, in that old-fashioned coach oh, it is Mrs. Jan Van Elten, senior. What a very, very quaint old lady! I have been presented at court," she added, with a little laugh, "and now all the law has been fulfilled."
Nevertheless, he was not so quick but that the man beyond was quicker, springing back sharp on the turn of his own hand. Cardwell stumbled as the door gave, unexpectedly easily, and nearly fell his length on the leads. Jacomb, on the second rung of the step-ladder, feels the wind of a missile that all but touches his head.
We have a number of these articles of inquiry formulated by archbishops or bishops. Cf. Cardwell, Doc. The last named work hereinafter cited as Hale, Churchwardens' Prec. For numerous examples of excommunication for non-appearance, see Barnes' Eccles. Proc., 29 ff. Incumbents, wardens and sidemen were almost always in attendance. Schoolmasters usually so when there were such.
Cardwell, Doc. See also in Roxburghe Ballads , i, 118, a ballad written circa 1620 which tells us: "There be diuers Papists, That to saue their Fine, Come to Church once a moneth, To heare Seruice Diuine. The Pope giues them power, As they say, to doe so; They saue money by't too, But I know what I know." Cf. See other visitations, passim. Hale, Crim. Hale, ubi sup., 167. See Queen's Visit.
With respect to the English book, Cardwell writing in 1840 and Freeman in 1855, considered revision, however desirable in the abstract, to be a thing utterly out of reach, not within the circle, as the parliamentary phrase now runs, of "practical politics."
There are no more innocent and charming girls in Manhattan than her daughters. She knew enough to make them different; so does the majority of that sort. Look at the Cardwell girl and the Innis girl and the Craig girl! Look at Mrs. Delmour-Carnes's children! And, Nina even Molly Hatpin's wastrel waif shall never learn what her mother knows if Destiny will help Madame Molly ever so little.
Whatever this man or that may claim to have done towards building up Confederation, I, who was in good measure behind the scenes throughout, repeat that to the late Duke of Newcastle the main credit of the measure of 1867 was due. While failing health and the Duke's premature decease left to Mr. Cardwell and Mr.
Cardwell, in his reply, alleged that these were honorary, but was afterwards obliged to admit that the Prince and the Duke were each paid for one colonelcy, the former £1350, and the latter £2200. He moved large reductions in the salaries of the commander-in-chief and the military secretary, in respect of their holding incomes from colonelcies, and repeated his motion in 1871.
The borough has had the good sense to prefer a merchant townsman, Sir Thomas Birch, and the son of a merchant, and friend and co-minister of the late Sir Robert Peel, Mr. Cardwell, to a soldier, and the dreamy poetical son of a Protectionist duke. A place like Liverpool ought to find in its own body better men than young lords or old soldiers.
