A love affair is not made to crouch down and brutalize itself like an English serving-maid who has callouses on her knees from scrubbing. It is not made for that; it errs gayly, our gentle love. It has been said, error is human; I say, error is love. Ladies, I idolize you all. O Zephine, O Josephine, face more than irregular, you would be charming were you not all askew.

But parents are stupidly egotistical, and believe that their pretty children ought to be born morally perfect. This moral perfection can be obtained only as the result of education. Don't expect your children to be models of virtue. Don't brutalize them by punishments and contempt because you discover that their primitive mental life duplicates the mental conditions of inferior animals.

I am afraid I was no better than my companions; I lived my life and drew from it whatever enjoyment it would bring; but, at least, I did not brutalize myself as some of them did; for that I may thank the refining influence of my early education.

They exerted all their influence, liquor run free all day and all the night before, tryin' to brutalize and craze the men into votin' as the Liquor Power dictated. But Elder White knew what they wuz about, and he and all the earnest helpers he could muster used all their power and influence, and the election wuz a triumph for the Right.

"To us it appears an obvious certainty, that whatever punishment is believed to be righteous whether the whipping of a child, the shooting of a soldier, the constraint of the treadmill, or whatever else is wholly free from the least tendency to brutalize the officers who inflict it." As to the wisdom of this statement, one would think, there could be no question.

Side by side, "upon the voyage," as they termed their lake or inland trips the Catholic and the Protestant knelt and offered up their devotions following the ways of their fathers, no more to be made a subject of dispute than a difference in color or height. The cursings and obscenities that taint the air and brutalize life elsewhere, were in this quaint old settlement unknown.

And let it not be said, these were the excesses of a tyrant. Man does not brutalize, by possibility, in pure insulation. He gives, and he receives. It is by sympathy, by the contagion of example, by reverberation of feelings, that every man's heart is moulded.

"Useful!" breathed Merle, scathingly. "Useful to brutalize a lot of brave souls who merely sought " he broke off with a new sense of outrage. "And not a policeman there to do his duty!" he finished resentfully. Wilbur Cowan sat in a carven chair near a corner of the beautiful desk, hitching it forward to rest his arms on the desk's top. He was newly appraising this white-faced brother.

God forbid, thought I, that I should brutalize this innocent creature; let her go at her own pace, and let me patiently follow.

Birtwell, in a voice out of which she could hardly keep the contempt she felt for her husband's weak rejoinder, "don't confuse the head, dethrone the reason, brutalize, debase and ruin men in soul and body as do wine and brandy. The difference lies there, and all men see and feel it, make what excuses they will for self-indulgence and deference to custom. The curse of drink is too widely felt.
